DF_The Big Show_’Fight in the Fog’

Mission Building Note: I had just made the last adjustment to this mission in the Mission Builder – then went back into it again and it wouldn’t open? – result, I could not put in the mission text. I then tested the mission and it is still working (phew). I have written the following mission text:-

During the afternoon on the 29th Jun 44, the C.O. Maxie Sutherland approached Pierre Clostermann and asked him if he would fly an urgent radar calibration flight and reconnaissance flight. The weather was foul with heavy rain showers and low visibility. Clostermann liked this type of mission where he was in ‘full control’ and not relying on his fellow pilots.

Mission briefing: Time: 1930. Clostermann would fly a circuitous route via ‘Lisieux’, ‘Bernay’, ‘L’Aigle, and ‘Gace’ reporting to the controller on each turning point. He would also note any German road movements marking their position on his map. He was warned to watch out for the flak near the towns and railway junctions and was reminded of the German fighter base ‘St.Martin’ situated near ‘Bernay’ – he was to try and avoid contact with enemy fighters!

Mission notes: After reaching ‘Gace’ the cloud level dropped to zero with heavy rain showers, forcing Clostermann to climb above the clouds. Setting a northerly course back to B11, he nervously scanned the sky after the Controller warned him of a large enemy fighter formation in the area. Soon he spotted 12 black dots breaking the cloud cover to his left – they quickly turned towards him – the chase was on!

After a hectic chase in thick/broken cloud cover, Clostermann managed to ‘shake-off’ his pursuers. Flying low again under the cloud base he suddenly spotted a lone Focke-Wulf, probably one that had been chasing him. He managed to ‘sneak-up’ behind the Focke-Wulf, which was following a railway line, and shot it down in flames, seeing it explode on impact.

Clostermann then headed back to B11 where another situation was about to develop?

My advice is to start this mission on ‘autopilot’ to ‘sync-in’ the mission timing’s. Take in the view and watch out for the flak. When approaching the mission end you will find you will need all your flying skills! (Sometimes there is a ‘random’ engagement situation at the end of this mission – unfortunately I can’t get back into the Mission Builder to fix this situation?)
