kraszus Posted May 15, 2023 Posted May 15, 2023 I've been playing both IL2 BoS and DCS WW2 warbirds. I enjoy both for different reasons. DCS - I create my own missions with a great deal of flexability. IL2 - PWCG! However, last few missions with IL2 I've been caught with enemy fighters on my tail and no callout from my Escort, no callout from my wingmen and, heck, not even my tail gunner will callout the bandit on my six. I'm glued to VR zoom looking for ground targets and next my aircraft is getting shredded from a bandit on my six while I'm on an escorted ground attack mission and not one of my flight, escort or crew will call out the bandit. In fairness, the escort did try to engage the bandit, but by this stage it was too late. I can maybe understand the escort or flight not calling the bandit IF they didn't see him, but heck, my own tail gunner didn't call it. 3
MAJORgoonMADLOU Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Was this a PWCG campaign mission? I was recently flying a traditional IL2 pilot career mission with p38s. On the way back to base after a Normandy patrol, our 8 p38s were suddenly attacked by 2 FW-190S. The German planes focused on one p38 and shot it down and the rest of the p38s did absolutely nothing! I attacked the German planes all alone as the remaining 6 p38s just flew on towards the base in formation as if nothing was going on. Talk about an immersion breaker! After that I decided to never fly the pilot career missions again. Started a p38 PWCG campaign to see how that goes. Have flown two so far with no problems.

MAJORgoonMADLOU Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Well at least the escort did react. I was a wingman and the 6 other p38s never reacted. There was no way they couldnt have seen them when they attacked that one p38. They eventually got me also being two against one. I dont have too much of a problem with my fellow pilots not calling out but they should definitely react when attacked.
kraszus Posted May 16, 2023 Author Posted May 16, 2023 Thinking this through, at the time of the attack the lead (AI) and I had broken off from eachother to search for ground targets. There was probably a mile or so separation at the time of the attack; so perhaps that's why I had no callout from him? But still, my tail gunner should have called it! I guess a workaround would be enabling the gunner to engage air targets from mission start and at least then I would hear his gun rattling if I was otherwise engaged in scouring for ground targets.
I./JG52_Woutwocampe Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 The AI behaves erratically (and I'm being polite) depending on the state of the current mission and the distance from the main target. Yesterday my whole flight of IL2 got slaightered by rabid 109s. I was the only one left out of 8, still 30kms away from our ground targets, while the La5s 'escorting' us were busy not doing anything. Because we were still far from our main goal, it seems the escort's navigational behavoir was not overriden by an engage the enemies order. Also, if you are engaged by enemy fighters on your way back home when the main objective is officially completed, again your flight is unable to react properly and will get slaughtered while not defending even if you order them to engage. That, plus the fact that you will never be warned of an enemy on your 6....nor can you warn anyone yourself... so infuriating. And its been like that for years and years but no improvement. 2

Do we have this now? As far as I know IN IL2 GB we get only at enemy contact 1 message and that's all. Because of that I use since 2017 selfmade warning mods with proximity triggers and subtitles and since 2020 with Audio warnings that I install before flying a mission. (I am testing currently a allied / english version) If your gunner does not react by shooting I suppose there is a problem with the mission design or a new bug that made your gunner total stupid. It works exactly as the axis / german version. Installation / mission takes ca. 2 - 5 minutes after the mission is loaded in the Editor. It worked in general during my Papua New Guinea EMG by Vander campaign missions, but the audio files are primitive. I will release it next weekend. Edited May 16, 2023 by kraut1 1

I have created a very short demo video of the Mod with the warnings by wingmen installed in a Quick Mission / Normandy Map. The english sound files are primitive but you get importent warnings during combat. I will release it soon. (in the first 5 seconds after mission begin there are always 1 or 2 unnecessary messages but after that it works normal) Edited May 18, 2023 by kraut1 1
