Livai Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 When the MG 131 are removed their is room for an extra Oil Tank required for long-range flights. We fly long-range with our A-8. With this extra Oil Tank what could be the benefits? - the Oil temps are better? - the engine runs much cooler than before? CSW_Tommy544 Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 In general, engines of this era burned quite a lot of oil when running. Though I am pretty sure that you would only run into issue of not having enough oil when on a mission that would require your plane to be equipped with large fuel drop tanks. This was the case with P-47s, so I guess it must have been similar with Fw-190 as well. Since we don't have an option to take drop tanks, I believe that most if not all planes will have no issues with oil tank capacity. 1 1

BlitzPig_EL Posted May 14, 2023 Posted May 14, 2023 Radials of all types typically go through a lot of engine oil, especially on long duration flights. This tank is no doubt there to increase the safety margin on the FW 190. I have read that the B-29 would use up almost 50 gallons of oil, per engine, on their long distance bombing missions against Japan.
FeuerFliegen Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 Can anyone tell us if extra oil with removed MG131 is modeled in game? It would be nice to know, especially if this aided in cooling (Fw190A can run pretty hot in summer temperatures), and aid in a situation where you took damage that caused an oil leak. There are situations where it would affect my decision to utilize this modification or not. I might have to test the two by running them each at full power with flaps and gear down and see if one overheats before the other.

Once I watched fifi land and taxi right up to me, and as the engines turned off much of the crew jumped out with gigantic buckets to catch the hemorrhaging oil, haha Edited May 17, 2023 by stug41 2

I spoke with a guy that owned a Russian Antonov AN2...when he bought it, it had a Russian engine that leaked oil all the time - so they replaced it with an American engine that leaked oil all the time. --------------------------------------------------------- As far as the extra oil tank for the A8 - no it is not modeled and no there is no benefit in the sim...it was likely very rare to use in real life. It probably only really used on some of the earlier G-series 190s and we have none of those. At any rate, the FW190A-8 should not have any real problems with overheating...by the time the late D2/TS/TU power plants were on hand it was a mature design that already had complete re-route/redesign of the exhaust system and engine bearer - and then with A-8 a redesigned oil and fuel pump and oil tank...the instructions was to keep the cowling open ground runs and only partially open in climbing, even in hotter tropical conditions. Otherwise closed. If the A8 is overheating easily (I'm too frustrated with it to fly it) then it's yet another issue with that aircraft that needs to be addressed.
FeuerFliegen Posted May 17, 2023 Posted May 17, 2023 So I tested two Fw190 A-8s, full fuel (unlimited), Kuban autumn map, 1000m. To get them to overheat ASAP, I did full throttle/boost, gear down, flaps down, cowl flaps closed. One A8 had no modificiations, the other had "Sturmjäger" and "Removal of MG 131" Both planes took about the exact same amount of time to overheat; they would start getting the technochat overheat messsage after about about 3 minutes 45 seconds, and at about 5 minutes 5 seconds, the engine would start sputtering and putting out close to no power.

That doesn't sound realistic at all.
