Iceni_Queen Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 So how can you make the P47-D fly the speeds it was said to fly at? AT best I can get about 350kph - almost 400kph. Even the P51 seems WAY to slow. The p47 D was spec'd at 686 km/h The P51D 710 km/h 1

ShamrockOneFive Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 The speed as indicated in the cockpit will not be what you've read about on a stats chart from Wikipedia or elsewhere. Those are true airspeed calculations. Here's a pretty good and straightforward explanation of what True Air Speed is. https://www.skybrary.aero/articles/true-airspeed 1
357th_KW Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) Every speed number you see for WW2 aircraft in a book is listing the aircraft’s best True Airspeed (the speed of the aircraft through the air, corrected for instrument error, as well as non-standard temperature and pressure), generally at high altitude. So for instance, the typical 437/440mph numbers you see for the P-51 were recorded at 25-30,000ft. The airspeed indicator in the airplane gives us indicated airspeed (technically calibrated or equivalent airspeed in IL-2 GB, as there is no instrument error or Mach consideration) - it’s essentially just measuring how much air pressure is in the pitot tube. At sea level, on a “standard” day (15 C, 29.92” Hg) that’s going to be identical to true airspeed. But as you climb, the air will get thinner and colder and the airspeed indicator will continue to read lower and lower compared to your actual speed. The difference is roughly 2% per thousand feet on a standard day - that P-51 doing 440mph at 25,000ft is only indicating about 290mph on the ASI in the cockpit. With regard to the P-47, it also has a number of additional engine controls you need to be aware of to get speed out of it. Here’s a good video tutorial on it: Edited May 9, 2023 by 357th_KW 2

jollyjack Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Well, it look like the P47D from the DCS stable is on steroids then ... i got about 425 kM/h.

FlyingH Posted May 9, 2023 Posted May 9, 2023 Are you reading kph or mph? a conversion from mph to kph by approximation by 1,6 gives close to the kph numbers you´re reffering to. 1
Iceni_Queen Posted May 9, 2023 Author Posted May 9, 2023 (edited) KPH no MPH. I know the difference KPH numbers are higher but are lower speeds 400 KPH is just shy of 250MPH. Were as a P47 hitting 350kph makes it about 217mph So yeah... HUGE Difference Even with the "Actual Airspeed" That makes a P47 about 3X as fast as a Folker D5 from WWI which I can hit cruise speeds of 126kph Edited May 9, 2023 by Iceni_Queen 1

Charon Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 All the people quoting speed tests really need to quantify them with density altitude and temperature. ?
CUJO_1970 Posted May 10, 2023 Posted May 10, 2023 Just slam the throttle to full boost and feel free to run wild with the prop pitch settings - don't worry the engine will be just fine.* *do not attempt in actual aircraft
FlyinCoffin Posted May 11, 2023 Posted May 11, 2023 (edited) please realism edit: Hey, realism is subjective. Some people say BOX is the most realistic, others say it is overly modeled and to sensitive. Some say CLOD is the best and others say it is to much like flying on rails. Some say that DCS is the most realistic because of complete click able cockpits, others say that doesn't make it like flying a real Warbird using a mouse. Some say WOTR is the Best SP CFS because of the immersive Campaign and the lifelike AI I could care less if someone on a Forum says the Sim I am flying is old or that there are better Sims. I am having fun, that is all that matters. its a sim. and developers go crazy about the money. you know what I mean ya? and by the way realism is not subjective. so a sim should make no fun. thats not the point. fun is subjective. realism is not. p.s.: Iam having some troubles telling my ideas in this language. p.p.s.: its the exact post from another thread but I think this fun thing is something that makes no sense. RossMarBow Posted May 16, 2023 Posted May 16, 2023 If you fly it right the p47 IS the fastest plane in the game over 30min You can sustain about 610 kph in the correct full speed mode
Skycat1969 Posted May 18, 2023 Posted May 18, 2023 I'm not fact-checking the numbers for P47D-28 or P-51D-25 for this reply; but I've often found that the 'top speeds' easily found on the internet for the Thunderbolt and/or Mustang series are actually taken from the P-47M and the P-51H.
