I am trying to understand the in-cockpit camera controls.  I have read the game manual, searched the forums, and viewed a number of youtube videos, but I still have quite a lot of questions.  Originally, I was going to ask all my questions in a single post, but then I realized that the answers to many of my issues depended on the answers to other questions.  I’m going to start small and begin with the Camera settings under the Settings menu.

Unless explicitly stated otherwise, all questions should be considered in the context of TrackIR turned off.

1. Meaning of the four “Head control Methods” (aka view modes)

There are four options: centered, fixed, gradual, and pan.  These can be changed via the “Change pilot head control method” under Camera keybinds, F9 by default.  I think the centered and fixed options simply change the behaviour of using “Snap head position” keybinds: Numpad keys [1-4, 6-9] (Numpad 5 appears to behave somewhat differently).  Specifically, under centered mode, the view will switch to a pre-defined snap head position while the numpad key is held, and will revert to default view when the key is released.  In contrast, under fixed mode, the view will remain fixed in the snap view, i.e., it operates as a toggle.  So there seems to be a clear and simple relation between these two modes (centered and fixed) and the various snap head positions.

However, the other two modes (gradual and pan) appear to be unrelated to the various snap head positions.  Rather they appear to move the camera, either in fixed increments (gradual) or continuously (pan), relative to wherever the camera happens to be facing.  For a TrackIR user, these two modes don’t appear to be that useful.

Is my understanding correct?  Am I missing something essential?

2. Meaning of the “Snap camera” and “Pan camera” settings.

Here I am referring to the two sets of options that relate to setting movement speed, inertia, etc.  How do these settings relate to the view modes described above?  Experimenting, it appears that the setting under “Snap camera mode” affect the behaviour of the camera in centered, fixed, and gradual view modes, whereas the setting under “Pan camera mode” only affects the camera in pan mode (which seems reasonable given the function names).

Is this correct?

Also, the manual states that “These settings do not interact with your mouse or if you are using an advanced viewing system, such as TrackIR.” I don’t believe this is correct.  The speed of movement to a defined snap view (in either centered or fixed mode) as set under Snap Camera Mode options operates the same whether TrackIR is enabled or not, i.e., these settings DO interact with TrackIR.

Finally, what is the effect of changing movement inertia?  I don’t notice any affect of modifying this value (at least when I set movement to 100%).

The post user manual about keybindings may help you out. There is a section in that post covering Camera and Pilot Head Controls.

There's also a lot more help in general in the IL-2 Sturmovik Resources post.

Hi JimTM.  Thank you for responding.  I have previously reviewed these posts and found them very helpful.  But I was not able to find the answers to my above questions in them.  Perhaps I missed it so I will review them again.

I have the same questions @Monash. We’re you able to locate any answers?
