zelil Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 Maybe Im doing something wrong but the Wingman in the game seems to be something improved in the game. Why can't number 2 stick to you like glue and 3 and 4 be given general commands? The enemy AI seems to be working in pairs. What I would like to see are commands for the second wingman, Thach weave, button hook, etc. Any thoughts? 1
MAJORgoonMADLOU Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 I have yet to see proper wingman activity in ANY sim. Must be something impossible to do.

All AI aircraft in the sim are independent actors in combat regardless of if they're friendly or enemy. The only thing they really do together is fly in formation. As a flight leader you can use the cover me command to some degree, but it results in your entire flight watching your six instead of just your number 2. But most of the time if you use it in combat your flight gets too scattered to make a difference anyhow. My recommendation if you want to play pairs with the AI is that you pick a high level AI pilot to lead and then place yourself in the number 2 slot and cover him.
[CPT]Crunch Posted April 29, 2023 Posted April 29, 2023 With the mission builder in old IL-2 you could set up the missions where 3 and 4 were a separate flight assigned to escort 1 and 2's flight, they would behave correctly by breaking off to protect and engage upon contact. Another trick was always make the wing man in the pair the highest experienced one, they would always peel off and defend if their lead came under threat. Running training scenarios built like that the guys would have a hard time distinguishing which pairs they were up against were the human.
