Wow, what a difference.

Steam VR - Mid settings, struggling to keep above 30fps in a dogfight.

OpenComposite - Settinngs almost maxed out/ultra, Quest 2 butter smooth locked at 72fps no matter how many planes are in the sky.

Really can't believe the difference, I'd assumed my CPU was struggling before but its barely getting warm.

For a long time I had discounted VR because my PC hardware wasn't up to much. How do you get on with the Quest 2? I've been eyeing it up, although I've since learned that the Quest 3 is likely due a release some time this year.

Cheers for the OpenComposite tip, I'll make a note of that plus the myriad other things I need to know for VR.

I'm still an idiot and am scared on the install of Open Composite, or OpenXR. Aare their simple instructions of a video somewhere? I'd love to try this on with my Rift S and see if I can crank some of the graphics settings more and get some smoother gameplay in VR thanks!

With OpenComposite's original OVR branch that was specifically for the Oculus runtime it was a huge difference for the performance of my Rift S a couple of years ago. Given the maturity of Oculus' implementation of the OpenXR runtime using the current OpenXR branch of OpenComposite should be the same in terms of performance gain.

And it's not something you cannot undo only something you wouldn't want to undo.

So I should have OpenXR and Open Composite installed? Or do I just go with OpenXR now? Or am I not getting this still? :)

Just curious what settings are you using on the OpenXR toolkit?

I'm struggling to find which mode works best for the Quest 2 between NIS, FSR and CAS.

To play SteamVR (OpenVR) games like IL-2 you need OpenComposite which acts as a translator to OpenXR. Once that is installed you need to tell the Oculus software that you want it to handle OpenXR (it's an option under General settings in the Oculus software I believe).

Quest 2 is great, comparable to the rift s but with the bonus of also being a stand alone VR kit if you dont just want it for PC gaming.

I only use OpenXR toolkit to adjust the world scale (everything is a bit miniature in IL2 by default and the in game IPD adjuster is horrible), nothing else. You don't need to even install openxr to use OpenComposite, it’s not required, just a useful tool for tweaking some vr settings.

Just follow the instructions on here for your headset. Its very simple to install. Get it working first, then add openXR toolkit afterwards if you want to tweak some settings.

All you need is this section - steps 1, 2 and 3 and you're done.

I have a rift s and there are some advantages using openxr toolkit. The main one is using upscaling with NIS or FSR. You can better control the overall resolution and sharpness with less impact on your GPU. Open xr toolkit is also good for tweaking contrast, colour, brightness etc.

and most importantly, adjusting the world scale! I hate how miniature planes are in IL2 by default, and the in-game IPD adjuster is a horrible hacky eye strain monster.

I have to fully increase world scale to 125% to get a full size cockpit.

I haven't tried that. I'll give it a go.

Thanks for dumbing it down for me. I'll give this a shot when I have some time.

I still use SteamVR, and looking for anything to increase performance...hard to believe my PC is almost 4 years old now.

Oh man finding the increase scale slider in SteamVR made VR so much better, I have mine bumped up too, maybe 118% or 125% something like that. Makes the cockpit and planes seem more realistically sized. Good to know there's still a way to do that without SteamVR. But I mainly want more fps.

Anyone using Virtual Desktop with the Quest 2, or are you tethered using the Link cable?  And, will OpenComposite work with virtual desktop?

I'm using VD but with PICO4, Open Composite works very well

Is there a link to Open Composite for latest version?

Oh, so it can work. All I get are error-box messages (using Pico4 on VD). Hopefully it'll work ok with the Pimax that has it's own OpenXR runtime software.

You only need open composite if you want to use openxr toolkit. In which case you have to use the "per game" install option which is detailed on the website.
