LINCOLN_BOND Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Quick Missions: During 1V1s with the P-38 and in some pretty thick clouds, I've been frustrated to find its attitude indicator to be "CAGED." Has anyone else noticed this?
1CGS LukeFF Posted April 25, 2023 1CGS Posted April 25, 2023 That's normal and is done to keep the gyros from coming out of alignment.
LINCOLN_BOND Posted April 25, 2023 Author Posted April 25, 2023 Sure, but I'm flying the aircraft in the weather and the attitude indicator is not working, no horizon line in view, only the "caged" flag is in view. For instance, in today's version of the T-6, the Texan II, we UNCAGE and adjust the standby attitude indicator during the Before Taxi checklist. We don't fly with a caged attitude indicator. It's required to be operational. If not, the aircraft is grounded.
LINCOLN_BOND Posted April 25, 2023 Author Posted April 25, 2023 This morning, I tried two scenarios with the P-38 and the attitude indicator was uncaged and working normally. I guess it was an isolated incident. By the way, LukeFF, I was stationed at Norton AFB, 1987-1989, living in the Mountainview Apartments, 1210 Tribune St, Redlands. 1
Art-J Posted April 25, 2023 Posted April 25, 2023 Since it's impossible to cage/uncage instruments manually by the player in this game, I seem to recall the game cages the AI automatically when you start maneuvering to simulate pilot doing it. Does it get uncaged back later during level flight - I don't remember, LukeFF might chime in and confirm.

Once you go over a certain G-force threshold (not exactly sure how much), your "pilot" automatically cages the gyro instruments. If you keep flying for some time (I think 30s or so?) without going over the G threshold, your pilot will uncage the gyro instruments again.
[CPT]Crunch Posted April 26, 2023 Posted April 26, 2023 Aren't you suppose to establish wings level before you uncage it after it's been caged for manouver? Maybe you want to try doing that for a few seconds before flipping up into the clouds. Hard to do if your getting shot at though.
Dragon1-1 Posted April 27, 2023 Posted April 27, 2023 They should put a button in to cage the instruments. IMO, this is another "simplification" that makes things harder than they should be. Taking away control is never good. 3
