Customizer171 Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 Hello! I am thinking of upgrading my ram. Right now I have Gskill 16 gb 3600 cl 16-19-19. I am aware that IL2 probably don't need more ram than this but I am thinking of starting to play DCS and MSFS as well. My first thought was to get the Gskill 32 gb 3600 cl 16 but then I saw that I could get 64 gb for only a little bit more money. The 32 gb had cl 16-16-16 while the 64 gb had cl 16-22-22. How big difference will the slower cl make? Is it noticeable?? I am playing in Vr, reverb g2 and only single player. What ram would you choose, the 32 gb with better cl or the bigger 64 gb with slower cl??
Guest Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 You'll notice zero difference. You'll see some from higher frequency though.

Are you saying that I won't see a difference between 32 and 64 gb ram in DCS and MSFS or do you mean that that the slower cl will make zero difference? I thought rams with lower cl help in reducing stuttering and minimize the low 0,1,%?? Especially when playing in VR. I understand that it will probably not increase the FPS but thought it would make the games run smoother? Is that incorrect? I am using a 5800x and a 3080.
102nd-YU-cmirko Posted April 24, 2023 Posted April 24, 2023 DCS and MSFS will be noticeably smoother with 32gb and less noticeably with 64Gb - as long as you stay on 1800Mhz FCLK and 3600Mhz ram speed you should be ok with XMP profile of the ram you buy....

My GSkill RAM is running at 6400mhz with 42CL and my VR is smooth (zero stutters). I have x4 sticks of 16GB. It won't run in full XMP (seems to be a widespread motherboard issue across brands) but over-clocked to 6400 is fine. It's the CL I don't think you'll see any difference, certainly not between cl 16-16-16 and cl 16-22-22. Edited April 24, 2023 by Hetzer-JG51

I am not good with computers so no overclocking for me ? Would you recommend the 32 gb sticks with faster CL or the 64 gb sticks with slower CL?? The price for the 64 gb sticks isn't much more expensive. 11 hours ago, Hetzer-JG51 said: It's the CL I don't think you'll see any difference, certainly not between cl 16-16-16 and cl 16-22-22. It depends what you do with your PC but not much need for more than 32GB if you don't do video editing and even then. I've read that too much can be detrimental in fact, ditto four sticks rather than two, but it's a debate rather than a certainty. What I can say is my game runs perfectly with my setup, though I suspect it would run exactly the same with half the RAM (two sticks instead of four, 32GB instead of 64).

For the moment I only play IL-2 and I don't run a lot of other programs at the same time. I want to update my RAM because I wanna try DCS and MSFS and I understand those games demand more than 16 GB RAM to run well. Looks like I will do as I first thought and go with the 32 GB sticks. Thanks for your advice. 1
