I don't like flying an identification streamer at those hours, though. My vision in the CV1 is bad enough enough without zoom or other enhancements; and when the sun's coming from the side those streamers can produce some "wiggling shadows" all over the front of my cockpit which can be distractive in the middle of a dogfight. I've flown Red/Red (scarf and streamer) for years; went to Red /White now that I'm breaking-in a new rig. I do it so others will be able to distinguish me from a 'bot; a courtesy to facilitate dogfighting between human pilots. But now I've noticed it can be a distracton and I don't need any more of those. So in the future (if I remember to take the streamer off) I'll probably just be flying a red scarf; at least, when the sun's low on the horizon, anyway. So don't nobody say I never warned ya. ? Off_Winters Posted January 13, 2022 Posted January 13, 2022 RFC 19 Squadron SPAD VII flown by New Zealander F/Lt. Harold Dawson. 19th September 1917. Harold Dawson on right. Harold Dawson's memorial plaque issued in 1926 to his parents. Harold Dawson was born at Gore on 3 December 1895, son of William Taylor and Grace Marion Dawson. He received his education at the Normal School and Technical College. He was a prominent member of the Baptist Hockey Club, and the Young Men's Bible Class, and was well-known in athletic circles. Prior to enlisting he was serving an mechanical apprenticeship with Messrs Cooper and Duncan. He was 5ft 4¼ in tall with a fresh complexion, brown eyes and black hair. Harold enlisted 17 November 1915 and was posted as a sapper with the New Zealand Expeditionary Force. He left with the Engineering section of the 11th Reinforcements for Suez but within a few days of arriving in Suez he had embarked again for France where he served as a motor 'dispatch rider for the signals company. Shortly after his arrival in France he was promoted to corporal, and this was followed by his transference to England, where he gained a commission in the Royal Flying Corps. He was one of three successful candidates out of the 350 who sat for the examination. He resigned from the NZEF to take up a commission in the Royal Flying Corp on 4 March 1917, later flying with No 19 Squadron. Since entering the Flying Corps he had been stationed first on the English Coastal Defence Stations, and then in France, where he had acted as pilot on scouting machine and on the battle planes. Sadly he was KIA on 4th October 1917 during an Ground Attack Patrol at 8-15am when he crashed. He is buried in Bailleul Communal Cemetery Extension, Nord, France. RFC's 'Field Service' form completed at RFC General Headquarters on 5 October 1917 it states 'Cause of death KILLED IN ACTION'. The document is held on his WO339 file. The RFC Communiqués suggest that Dawson achieved three victories: 19 September 1917 - While searching for reported EA, four Spads of No 19 Squadron attacked and engaged six Albatross Scouts near Becelaere. Lieut H Dawson observed one of the scouts diving at his tail, so stalled his machine, with the result that the Albatross Scout shot past below, and Lieut Dawson immediately dived after him, and got in a good burst at close range, and the enemy machine went down out of control and crashed. I have this at 18:50 over Zillebeke; in Spad 7 B3618. 22 September 1917 - On the evening of the 22nd, 2nd Lt H Dawson, No 19 Squadron, drove down an Albatross Scout out of control. I have this at 18:55 over Gheluwe; in Spad 7 B3620. 24 September 1917 - In the evening, 2nd Lieut H Dawson, No 19 Squadron, attacked a two-seater Rumpler and shot it down out of control. I have this as 18:30 over Poelcapelle; in Spad 7 B3520. 4

Guest deleted@219798 Posted January 25, 2022 Posted January 25, 2022 Mission 10 Red Knights campaign. I don't know if something went wrong with AI, but Albatros planes just weaved around not doing much. AI SE5s just kept flying and took little evasive action or attacked.
No.10_Ace_Ivo Posted February 21, 2022 Posted February 21, 2022 Some nice D.VIII and SPAD VII pics. 3

=IRFC=Gascan Posted March 16, 2022 Posted March 16, 2022 Gorn flew a raid on an Entente airfield after the sun set on the FlugPark. Gardimus is sneakig into position with his SE5a while Gorn starts his drop. Thanks for the new spotlights and fires for navigation, Sizzlor! The night sky and the sunset were also spectacular. I am really looking forward to future night bombing missions. Even better if we get the FE2b in FC3 ? Before attacking the airfield, Gorn was kind enough to respond to a challenge to a Heavyweight Championship Match and dueled with Kotori and I in our HPs. It was quite a sight when three massive aerial battleships duked it out with tracer fire in the darkness, human gunners and all. The HPs ate up several Becker shells and all machines were riddled with bullets. Gorn even drew his pistol! It came down to good shooting: a hit with the Becker lit Kotori on fire, then the twin Parabellum killed my pilot from a couple hundred meters. Amazing fight, and I'd love to do it again! Any volunteers to fly or operate the guns? Earlier in the mission, Kotori, Gardimus and I loaded up a flight of three Gothas and managed to sneak across the lines to the Industrial Complex. Kotori set up his bomb sight and Gardimus and I dropped on his command. The results beneath us speak for themselves: a tight pattern that successfully destroyed the target. A few pilots from 3PG came to play with us in SPAD 7's and SE5a's. Here, and SE5a shows off the use of the over-wing Lewis gun. The Gothas returned fire through the Gotha Tunnel, and this SE5 had to retreat. Another SPAD 7 shot down Kotori, but my gunner Echo sniped the pilot. Another SPAD came to play and got shot up pretty good. When he retreated, I turned to chase but found three new SPADs coming my way and was killed before I could get back to the lines. 3

I only started flying the bombers a short time ago; stopped for a while to work on my sim pod; and this was the first time I was able to get it to go all the way over in an actual loop; usually the torque and P-factor try to turn my loops into an Immelmann with a roll-out at the top. This time I reduced power, got the nose down to build airspeed, and then pitched up smoothly but not overly-aggressively; added power to get over the top and needed some aileron and rudder to keep her honest. No bomb load but at least this time the wings did stay on and she went clean over the top. After that I did a successful landing on the frozen side of a mountain. Well, I mean, we all survived the initial touchdown and stop; right up until the plane slid back down, flipped, broke in half, and exploded. ? Love those Zoo Wings maps! ? ADDIT: Today I loaded the TURN UP TURNOISE map. Zoo has Bot Bombers ("Botbers?") dropping warheads on cities, returning to base, and making nice landings in the green field adjacent to the aerodrome! No crash landings! No sticky mud! And the wheel tracks don't disappear like they do now. Good stuff! ? Edited April 14, 2022 by Todt_Von_Oben
[CPT]milopugdog Posted April 24, 2022 Posted April 24, 2022 Had some time to fly during a recent snow storm. Very excited for recon planes to get UI for their cameras! 4
