I have been playing the new pilot career mode and it is excellent. I did play ROF multiplayer a lot. Not sure how it works with Flying Circus...? Squads events and so on... Any tips for a new player?

Welcome, scarpo! Always glad to see new pilots (or returning ROF vets like you) here. Definitely give the New Players FAQ link a look and check out the Flugpark Discord server: https://discord.com/invite/sStewGJXPQ

Also, for a fun and informative intro to multiplayer life, I'd check out @US96_tRoosevelt's excellent Circus Chronicles newspaper. The latest edition is hot off the press today:

See you in the skies! ?

Apologies if this isn't quite the right place to post/ask this - I have had a look round the forum and thought it best belonged here rather than starting a new thread. I'm hoping that some of this might help other newbies that come along too.

I've recently returned to flight sims after a very long break. I played a lot of Their Finest Hour as a child, inspired by my grandparents stories and the BoB is one of my favourite periods (I have CLoD as well), then moved onto Red Baron and the first IL-2. My great grandfather was an Air Mechanic (2nd Class) in the RFC - unfortunately he was hit by a propeller (contact!) and though he survived the war his internal injuries contributed to an early death - and my grandmother's favourite uncle was a pilot in the RNAS so I've always been jointly fascinated by WW1 and the RFC/RNAS especially.

I've really only experience of SP but I'm very curious about MP - though I have no prior understanding to call on. I'm pretty much a camel-jockey so far, I knew I had to pick a bus to learn and as I love a challenge/am a glutton for punishment this seemed like the obvious choice. I've been practicing in SP, getting to grips with the engine, tuning my gunnery on AI etc but I think I'm approaching the limits of what SP can prepare me for - unless there are some things I'm missing that would be helpful to learn first?

I haven't yet dived into the Flugpark but I think that time is approaching. I'd love to join a squadron for the camaraderie and I see that there are quite a few active ones and all of them great - so I'm not sure how to choose, or request a posting from the pilot pool at St Omer?

I understand that Discord is important - as a VR pilot (love the immersion in FC) will that work with my headsets mic or do I need to fit a separate underneath (I can but would rather not for comfort)?

Looking forward to meeting you in the skies soon!

You might want to contact these lovely people:

..and Discord will work with the VR headset mic - you just need to tell it in User Settings/Voice & Video which device you're using (you may also need to adjust Windows Sound settings).

See you in the Park!

Yep, Discord works with whatever headset mic you have, although some headsets have better mics than others, they all get the job done. The Jasta 5 FlugPark discord is a common meeting area, although there are a couple other discord channels that different squadrons use.

The FlugPark is pretty busy on Sundays if you get there at the right time (check the Sunday Fame or Flame thread for specifics, but it's afternoon US and evening EU).  Saturday you can visit the Knights of the Sky server for the Saturday Fly In. Tuesday people tend to hang out on the Ad Astra server, with a battle set for both EU and US time zones. If it's not Tuesday or Saturday, the FlugPark is the most common place to find other players since it has an AI dogfight zone in the middle when server population is low, but Sunday is by far the busiest time for players. All three servers are up pretty much all the time, but generally low population or empty unless it's Saturday, Sunday, or Tuesday.

I recommend you find a busy time to fly, make sure discord is working, then give it a shot. I think flying is much more fun in a group with voice-chat going. Not only do I have other people making contact reports and callouts before and during a fight, I also have good people around to chat with during the downtime while patrolling or travelling to/from a recon mission.

RNAS10 is on the Flugpark most days.  Generally around 1800 gmt.   We have a discord page, and setup for coms.  Shoot me a note if you'd like to join us for a flight.  Older guys, small group.

Thanks Ted for the recommendation!
