Mind blown.
I mentioned in a thread yesterday a brief moment of time at least a year ago when I had graphics that were close to monitor quality, using Open Composite. A Steam update scuppered that, never to see their return (despite hours of trying).

To find out if altering the slider in SteamVR actually does anything with Virtual Desktop (set to Godlike mode) I put it up to 200% (that's around 4200x4200). I was expecting a slide-show in the game if it actually worked.
Long story short, no more shimmering from ANYthing and the planes are crisp as a crisp thing. And 90fps!!! Lowest I saw was 87fps. Smooth as silk too.

All hail the 4090 I guess. :)

I am still using an RTX 3080, but I will play around with this to see if there is any difference.  Thank you.

I put it up to over 5000x5000. I'm not sure if there was any further improvement but I'm assuming the thing caps out beyond a certain point because my FPS didn't change.

When I had it this good on the 3080ti I think my FPS was around 45 (solid and smooth).

Looks like it was MS with WMR who were responsible for the IQ tanking some while back.

Hetzer - Based on this, do you consider the Pico superior to your old G2?  Some of the reviews I saw preferred the Pico for edge to edge clarity, but said that the G2 was still sharper in the center.  How would you compare them?  Thank you!

Do you need to restart steam VR for this to take effect?

My opinion is yes, it's superior, but significantly only in that its IQ is not being held back by WMR shenanigans (capped slider resolution/super-sampling). The edge-to-edge clarity thing, that was never much of an issue for me, I point my head where I want to look rather than swivelling my eyeballs.
Physically, out of the box, the G2 was comfortable, the Pico anything but. I've had to buy the AMVR face-gasket to make it wearable for longer than ten minutes.

I don't know if the G2 is still capped by WMR but if its not and the same IQ is now achievable I would see no reason to switch.
Oh, the FOV. The Pico's is definitely better but I still find that once I'm engaged in the cockpit I kind of stop noticing it. It was so in the G2 and the same in the Pico. Others' mileage may vary of course. :)
The 'sweet-spot'...how sharp does it need to be? With the IQ I have now it's as sublime as I need/want it to be. The difference between the Pico now and the G2 back then (with the WMR cap), negligible.

Qcumber, yes, you need to restart SteamVR after changing that setting.

Regarding this sweet-spot thing, I need to define the experience a little better.

In the cockpit I could read the labels just as well with the G2 as I can now with the Pico4. That's with the G2, as it was back then, being IQ-capped by WMR (except for that brief time with Open Composite before the Steam/WMR update nerfed it). That, I guess, was the G2's sweet-spot compensating. But the Pico4, right now, is as good.

The huge difference with the G2's crippled IQ and the Pico4's un-capped one is outside the cockpit and no amount of the G2's 'superior' (?) sweet-spot could compensate. At dead 6 o'clock, 300m range, planes' wings were horrible shimmering, broken, blocky lines. The horizon shimmered. Buildings shimmered. It was horrible. With the Pico4 at VD Godlike and 200% SteamVR slider, all that crap is gone. Some items (those camo nets over the runway watch-towers as an example) still shimmer somewhat, but 95% of it overall is gone and planes look crisp from any angle and right out to a hell of a distance. Not as good as a high-rez monitor but well inside the "wow" ballpark.

If you can't get solid wings from 6 o'clock, as described above, with your WMR headset, upgrade to the Pico4. :)

This goes for the 3080ti and 4090. Lower than 3080ti I can't say.

I sell my G2 because of shimmering in the game. Glad you are the lucky one. ?

I have noticed much less shimmering with the Pico 4 and Virtual Desktop. It was much worse, and harder to manage, on my rift s through open composite. I had presumed this was due to the resolution change but if it happens on the G2 as well then perhaps it is related to Virtual Desktop.

I think it's down to the capped resolution/super-sampling on headsets that have anything to do with WMR.

This is a limit that SteamVR impose to certain devices. I don´t know what is the cap for the Pico4.

But for sure there is one limit, otherwise your fps would not be 90fps with 200% SS.

You can check what is your maxRecommendedResolution in your file.

I think you can manually change it, so the 200% value will be effectively taken and your fps will be then affected.

I figured I must have hit a cap, there's no way I'd still be getting 87 to 90fps at 5000 x 5000. Lol. No idea what that cap is but I'm very happy with the IQ I've got, bouncing the revs off the limiter. Lol.

"default vr settings" in the config file:  "maxRecommendedResolution": 8192,

That's the cap?! If so it makes no sense because my slider setting of 5000 x 5000 goes beyond that, meaning (?) I'm running at 8192 horizontal. There must be something that prevents all the hardware from trying to render beyond what it's physically capable of. I think. Lol.

I installed fpsVR and this is what I'm getting in-game. 250% on the SteamVR slider is 4932 x 4932 according to this widget.
On top of that apparent impossibility the GPU useage is around 75%.
No, I'm not hallucinating superb graphics IQ and smooth as silk performance either. Lol.

I should add that the pic is just after exiting the game but the salient figures are what I was seeing in the cockpit.
