SIA_ArcTander Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 Hi 1CGS, Re the Spitfire MkXIVe (F and FR) that is available now, I note that the XIVe does not have any more fuel than the XIV. According to my knowledge one of the benefits of the XIVe over the XIV was that it had extra fuel with extra fuel in a rear tank. I have checked my literature source and this confirms that the XIVe had 142.5 gallon fuel capacity instead of the 112 gallons of the XIVc. Please can this be added to give the correct fuel loadout, either in full, or as a mod. Source is: 'Spitfire the History' ISBN 0-946219-48-6 5th ed p 420. 1 1
JG7_X-Man Posted April 8, 2023 Posted April 8, 2023 (edited) The sentence starts as below: As for the F Mk. XIV... The term "as for" and "as to" at the beginning of a sentence is in order to introduce a slightly different subject that is still connected to the previous one (in the case the XIVe). Which means the 142 1/2 gals is referring to the XIV and not the XIVe. In English, those punctuations matter. Edited April 8, 2023 by JG7_X-Man
SIA_ArcTander Posted April 8, 2023 Author Posted April 8, 2023 Punctuations matter indeed. So does the definitive article 'the'. The lack of it in this sentence, combined with the 'except for' is calling out a distinction. Here - the F MK XIVE is 'the same as' the F MKXIV, except for an addition rear fuel tank and the 'E' type wing. The context is also important - the entire page (now copied in, apologies for shadow) contains specifications for all the marks, and that section is the 'addendums' calling out how the Marks differ vs the stock F MK XIV. You can see this clearly with the FR comparison with the F as it (the FR) includes a Camera whereas the 'F' doesn't. As a native English speaker from England, I read this document very much as a 'the XIVE has 31 gallons more total fuel capacity than the XIV'.
SIA_ArcTander Posted April 10, 2023 Author Posted April 10, 2023 In addition the pilots notes also confirm the existence of an extra 31 Gal fuel tank in the FR Mk XIV.
