I just wanted to sing some praise for the DFW. CV. The artillery missions and bombing missions in career mode simply deliver an unparalleled excitement. Swirling past british AA Machine guns while getting bullets put into the wings, radioing in the positions for artillery to hit, then escaping fighters and limping over no mans land is great. And so the DFW is a great plane, and one that can bring excitement regardless of the fact that it is not a fighter. Great job on this plane devs!

Yup, lovely plane, and quite graceful too. Started the career, and looking good flying in a squad of them

Hmm, trouble is - landing in one piece. I'm finding that unless I land with the delicate touch of a butterfly's wing upon a baby's cheek, the damned thing ends up a shattered pile of skip-fodder.

Must be doing something wrong. Hints welcome

Change your name to "Lands like a butterfly"... that might help mate ?

Admittedly that is a problem I have too. As long as you can walk away from it...

the plane is prone to crosswinds even if it is little.  And try to land with little thrust and roll out slowly.  Always land against the wind, even if the given landing direction of the airfield is different.

Accidentally I found this old video about landing the DFW in rise of flight.

Same in Flying Circus ?

Sadly my career went poorly on the very first mission.

Got bounced on the way out but the escorts pulled them off and the entire flight got to the target.

Then a flight of SPADs hit us on the return journey. I was bobbing and weaving but maintaining formation to maximize defensive fire. All was going well until my gunner killed a SPAD pilot that was on my six. Next thing I know I have a plane landing on top of my wing as the enemy plane continued its trajectory.

My wings collapsed in the impact and I rolled over and began to fall nose first.

My plane fell a few meters and slammed into the tail of another member of my flight, snapping his plane in two.

I then watched all 3 planes fall to the ground in external view, amazed at the turn of events and not even thinking to eject due to not realizing that my crew had parachutes. (I'm used to fighters which dont) boy was I surprised to see the other DVA crew successfully bail just as my plane hit the ground.

Not gonna lie, it was probably the most interesting career death I have experienced in IL2.

Thanks, that was useful.

And will also require considerable practice to get right! ?

Just starting a career in the DFW (1st ever 2-seater career), and I'm looking forward to the new variety of mission types.

Can't find a famil vid on the type though or indeed much guidance in the "Specification" tab in game, so I am wondering what controls there are - presuming not mixture, but which radiator controls need to be mapped? I mapped the water rads, but couldn't see any levers moving in game.

Anything else besides throttle and eventually rads?

And lastly, any way to invert the vertical mouse movement for the gunner? I'd like mouse-up to equal gunsight-up and not vice versa, but I can't work out which control settings I'm trying to change (doesn't appear to be camera).

All you need for engine controls with the DFW C.V is the throttle.

Cheers, Luke.

I saw a couple of levers in the cockpit and thought that I might need more mapping.

Any idea how to reverse the mouse y-axis for the gunner position? And, yes, I have read the manual...

I would have to check that and see, unless someone else here has a faster answer. It might be one of those things that is hard-coded.

That did it!

Many thanks, Ghost.

I'm using the right mouse button to nestle to gunsight - at present I have to keep that pressed to move the gun and then use left mouse to fire. Is that the correct way, or there another way to move the gun without having to keep right mouse pressed?

Apologies if dumb question, but the manual isn't massively clear to me.

No, you shouldn't have to. With the default controls, it's one click to take control of the gun, another to aim, and then just moving your mouse around to move the gun.

Thanks, Luke, so I wonder what I'm doing wrong then?

Not sure. The best thing to do in situations like this is to start over with a clean input profile and see if the problem is still there.

That worked, thanks, Luke.

Bit of a PITA setting all the mapping up again, but we are there now.

Ta.
