Haluter's Skin Downloader

Are Flying Circus pilots using this? If so, I'm surprised we don't have a link pinned here. Anyway, I'm considering uploading all of my skins here if it's worth the trouble.

Honestly skin downloader is more trouble than it's worth. Most of my FC skins have come from the forum. Just too much bother with the skin downloader.

I've only started using Haluter's very recently in connection with looking for existing squadron default skins for use in my project for career mode, and I've found it very useful and pretty simple to use.  I'm still trying to figure out whether it's the right place/way to handle making all my career mode skins available, so I'm not sure if it will work well for that purpose, but I'm hoping it will 'cause it seems like a really neat tool.

I would say that it's worth the trouble (which is not much). And I do not think I'm wrong in saying that very few FC skinners continue to persist in using the forums for disseminating their skins.

The automatic installation of the skins you've chosen to download. The program informs users (when it is run) that skins on their computer have been given updates by the artist (which was a big plus for me as an artist also). The forums search tool is just plain frustrating for searching for skins (or anything for that matter). The artists do not have to find/use their own online storage or create/maintain download links etc. It's a no-brainer.

HSD is a game changer for managing skins. I can search for a particular artist, a particular plane, all the planes from a particular module, historical skins, fictional skins, generic skins for squadrons, skin packs for an event, etc. It can download and install, update changes to skins, and even uninstall and remove unwanted skins. The two part skins for planes like the Gotha and HP are also handled easily. Every skin I have ever made is there, every skin I will ever make will be on there. The chances of me downloading a skin that is not on HSD is vanishingly small. My brother and I have occasionally had issues with getting it to work, but have always been able to clear them up without unreasonable effort. The effort spent making it work (usually a fresh reinstall and verifying permissions) is less than the effort saved by using HSD. It is literally made to make distributing and managing skins easier, does a good job of it, and is used by the vast majority of skinners and players that I know.

Well I don't know what there is to be confused about? Haluter's downloader claims to download new versions of skins you have and delete the old. Well it did that, but left the old skins, so I ended up deleting them from each folder. I'd say that's a lot of trouble. On my old PC downloader took quite a while to open. I don't want or need a lot of skins, just for the planes and the units I want to fly with, and i can easily enough find them on the forum. So I can manage quite well without it. Maybe some people can't.

  1. Oliver uploads myskin.dds to HSD.
  2. Player downloads myskin.dds through HSD.
  3. Oliver makes some changes to myskin.dds and reuploads to HSD.
  4. Player chooses to let HSD update myskin.dds when informed of it.
  5. HSD downloads myskin.dds to the relevant skin folder. As it's the same filename the original is overwritten.

So no old versions of updated skins remaining that need to be deleted.

The program does not delete skins that you've chosen to download from other sources and that the artist has not uploaded to HSD though.

Also should the player rename skins in folders then those are also not removed. As it's no longer the same skin (and the new name is unknown to HSD). That was also another benefit to me as an artist also. I've had issues before HSD with players doing the installation of my skins and renaming them in their folders and then wondering why teammates don't see them in that skin etc. Taking away the installation from the user helps prevent that and ensure everyones running with the same filenames.
