Flying Circus vs ROF??

Hello All!!

I have Rise of Flight.  I was wondering if anyone can help or tell me if I should go ahead and buy Flying Circus.  What are the differences and is there a great deal of one over the other.

Much appreciated.  I hope to see and meet you all in the skies!

Much more aeroplanes in RoF with a full career structure... FC is only half done (FC1 and 2), there are another two instalments (FC3 and 4) yet to come (haven't been made yet). We wont see that come to fruition for at least another two years perhaps.

For me, the career in RoF is far better than FC... eventually FC will catch up once everything is released.

At the moment there is no talk of doing the Channel map or the seaplanes in RoF for FC.

RoF is currently the better game IMO, but FC has VR support so its all I play now!

This ?

I love RoF, and I miss a lot of the planes that haven't made it into FC yet, but since I first flew a Bf-110 through the valleys of the Kuban map in VR several years ago I haven't been able to bring myself to fly on a monitor, so I haven't touched RoF since then.  FC in VR is as awesome as I was hoping it would be, so it will definitely be all FC for me going forward.  If I didn't have VR, however, I'd still be playing RoF, at least until FC catches up with volumes 3 and 4.

FC in VR is as awesome

That is so true !

Everything IL-2 GB is awesome in VR.

It would be worth buying a VR HMD only to play IL-2 GB.

My personal preference is those Great War early birds ... in glorious VR !

It has great performance, also in VR, without even needing MT, DLSS and/or FSR.

I can't wait to get FC 3 and ... IV(?).

I tried a while ago with a HP Reverb G2 but the graphics were not as crisp as my 4k 40" screen so I went back to it and still prefer it.

In particular it was a problem for ground targets.

Is there any new tech headset out that IL-2 would look as good as a large 4k screen? I remember looking at the original Varjo aero but it had some issues like no reprojection etc. Hoping there's a next generation of headsets out/coming. I probably need to do some research.

From what I've seen from trying to follow the various VR-related threads around here over the past few months, I doubt if there are any VR HMDs that would be able to rival the crispness/clarity of something like a 4k monitor screen.  But to me at least that's not the real key metric when it comes to VR - for me, the immersion and sense of "being in the cockpit" that VR gives you is way more important than the fact that the image on the monitor is sharper.  But everybody has different things that they find more important than others so it's good that there are options.

There are a couple of very good threads in the VR subforum here that talk about the differences between the various models of VR headsets and how they work for IL-2 - definitely worth spending some time plowing through some of them before you make any decision about getting a VR headset.

Great thanks.

Yeah for sure the resolution wasn't the only factor, the improved immersion was there but it weighed against several other negative factors that I was missing with VR.

I'm thinking if I can just get the image quality over the line I'd be willing to put up with the other tradeoffs.

Can't speak for RoF as I no longer use it (and IMHO memory serves people badly), but I -used to- fly IL-2 GB on an LG OLED, but now with my PICO 4 HMD ...

Indeed, the image on the monitor is still a bit "sharper" as I would call it.

But I run the PICO 4, using Virtual Desktop software, at Godlike resolution (3300x3300x2), downscaled to 2160x2160x2.

To me, but especially for me personally, it is clear, 2D gaming is ... done.

IL-2 GB being the PRIME showcase of what VR can bring to our hobbies.

Being IN the cockpit is, again to me personally, the whole idea of a SIM-game, so VR-6 DOF is the way to play *any* flight sim.

About the discomfort ... sure it is not pleasant.

But OTOH flying those early warbirds also required pilots to wear some kind of goggle/mask, 'headset' that makes a VR HMD not at all awkward.

Playing something like "Kayak VR" with a headset OTOH ... for those kinds of games (enjoying nature, swimming, walking ...) my PICO 4 bothers me quite a lot.
