How does one change the format of the screenshots we take? Using the default BMP is recockulious!

DCS allows several output types. Surely IL2 GB allows it as well. Where?

Nope, no way to change it. Just open it in an image editor and save it how you want.

I open bmp image in Gimp. Resize it to 1800 pix. and save it as a jpg file.

Necro-posting after searching .... Annoyed at .bmp screenshots and having to manually convert them. At one time, maybe in the '46 iteration of IL-2, there was a simple menu item to change the preferred screenshot format (.jpg, .png, .tif, .bmp, etc.) Can we please have that back? Nobody uses .bmp any more, do they?

Simple web search finds this:

"... Obsolete but functional: BMP is an older raster image format that is still functional and supported by many programs, especially older ones.

Large file sizes: The main reason it's considered obsolete is its lack of compression, resulting in large file sizes that are slow to download and transfer.

Inefficient for modern use: For modern applications like web use, it is inefficient. It has been largely replaced by more modern formats like JPEG and PNG that offer compression and other features.

Still in use: You can still find and use BMP files, and they are sometimes used for specific purposes or in applications like MS Paint... "

LMAO, I wasn't aware that MS Paint was still available. Color me Adobe'd.

There is something to be said for having an uncompressed screenshot format available, as an option, since it can pay off considerably if you need to crop an image, or for debugging LOD weirdness etc. I'd agree though, it would be nice if IL-2 GB had other options. Hopefully they'll do it for the new Korea engine at least.

Regarding MS Paint, I suspect it's mostly still there because the filesize footprint etc is insignificant, and removing it would cause complaints from those that occasionally find it useful, and don't have (or need) Photoshop etc. Personally, I've been using Paint.net for years, which is a raster-graphics editor like Paint, but with a lot more capabilities. Freeware, from here: https://getpaint.net/

An uncompressed format (*.bmp, *.tiff) is always going to give more quality and more control. If one wants one should be able to set up a batch file to convert all the BMPs to JPGs by simply clicking an icon, you just need a converter that can be called by command line, and then a command to delete the original files.

On the other hand, if the game output a compressed file format by default - you'd be stuck with all of the compression artefacts (and whatever settings were chosen to produce that compression).

Thanks. Is the dds format useful, like does it have interlace etc .... IMO now with a Blimp we should use Gimp.
