Is this a common thing ? Or was I just very lucky ?

It was the sound of the wind that really got to me....

How much control did you have?... because that landing on just the wheels was a very dangerous thing to do considering the state of the aeroplane.

Could you not get the tail down for a safer 3 point landing?

You're absolutely right - its a bad habit I'd got used to getting away with - wrongly - when used to land on nice flat runway grass I can often get a two wheels then let the tail drop - it does not work so well on cross country or uneven soil as per the field landing example above.

The guides I read this afternoon say firmly plant 3 points down - which I'll now adjust to now.

I survived that last minute flip by sheer luck - I'd burnt off enough speed, I probably also rushed the landing ( the lack of engine and prop had moved to the front of my mind at that point - no retries - and tree lines coming up ).

The crack 3/4 through the left wing was probably nagging at me as well to not to try anything too heavy to pop it, that said its not like I was going to be needing the wing much longer as no engine anyway. So as you say I should have 3 point planted it and that would have burnt off more speed as well as the tail runner bit in.

I'm enjoying learning this these WW1 period aircraft this really captures the beauty of the flight models - as per the video first time I've flown "through" another aircraft, clipped, nudged, nipped, and pranged - but never through.

Ok so this got more complex than I thought - having just tried the same 30 times the findings as follows -

Test scenario - Take off from airfield , climb to 200 ft - 180 degree turn level out , engine off - power 0% ,mix 0%, prop and engine turn but no power now and land - 3 point if possible ( the tail is harder to get down when not under power ) Arras Spring Map - airfield near Le Hameau free flight in a SE5a.

Airfield land and a radius around airfields behaves differently to land away from the airfield - all land away from airfields gives only about a 10%-20% chance of not not flipping as it appears deemed to be "uneven" land - so two wheels or 3 plant didn't make much of a difference as the flip chance is higher as the land is deemed uneven and the 'crashing' sound is played far more often.

I was able to get away with some pretty terrible (hard 3 point down) approaches on "airfield radius" land which just would not work at all on normal land - its almost as if the sim is deciding I am crashing as the engine is off and am nowhere near an airfield - hence the higher flip chance and crash sound.

For the info of all, recordings available if anyone wants.
