[80 years ago today] "• The F4F-3S Wildcatfish makes its first flight. It was inspired by appearance of the Nakajima A6M2-N Rufe, a modification of the Mitsubishi Zero. To counter instability problems, small auxiliary fins are added to the tailplane. Because this is still insufficient, a ventral fin will be added later. The weight and drag of the floats reduce the maximum speed to 241 mph. Edo Corporation provides 100 sets of floats, but with longer ranged land based fighters coming on line, as well as additional carriers, the project will be canceled.
