AI using FLAPS all the time

Recommended Posts

Hello everyone,

I started 2 career modes (LAGG3 and He-111) and in all missions there is at least 1 of the pilots that keeps the FLAPS down all the time.

I think its always the last plane of the group.

So the group leader keeps going in circles waiting for him.

Anyone else noticed that?

yes.  P40E  Moscow career.

It seems to be a condition that has spread throughout all of the planes.

The AI has been watching players, and learning...

I notice that when I forget my flaps and fall behind, they don't come back for me...........

Or am I missing the 'hint'?     ?

I have noticed this for some time also. I found that the F5 command seems to fix them (rejoin formation and continue the mission)

During the climb after takoff?

Yes, after takeoff, during the climb, and to the 2nd waypoint halfway to the target. Then they will form up and fly straight.

Yeah I noticed this in my ME262 campaigns and actually sometimes the last AI pilot can't get the thing off the ground and crashes. When this happens the AI lead circles around his dead friend ? On the runway I have noticed the front wheel is pointing the wrong way.

Right after takeoff P-47s were dropping like flies off the end of runway. There is a missions report out there on it.

I will also notice enemy ai planes using flaps in situations where it makes no sense, such as climb, or when they are shot up and their plane is slow (so flaps then make them go even slower).  Not a new thing.

Yep, sometimes they retract FLAPS, when they loose too much speed and starts to fall, then they extend them again. Its a cycle.

One thing that comes up on this thread and many others.

How did the QA's not notice this?

How did the engineering lead sign off on the build before the customers receive the product?

I'm thinking it started after one of the 'patches' or 'upgrades'. It wasn't always so, at least I don't think it was.

I also noticed the same thing. I flew as a German pilot from Moscow to Bodenplatte and sometimes a pilot of my squadron "forgets" the flaps down after takeoff. I also thought that it was the AI that simulated a failure of the flaps system! Even in one of Bodenplatte's last missions a Dora of my squadron has "forgotten" the gear down!

I believe it started in the update that had your flight climb "better" with you. It seems like when they get behind the power curve to climb out after takeoff (or spawning in mid-air), they do flaps down, nose up....

Yes.  Spawning in at the waypoint has always been a cluster frak , unless you go full autopilot to form up into your proper spot.

In some combat flight sims if you get into a spin, the AI pilot will get you out of it. But in a P-38 and Spitfire Mk.XIV, I got into a spin and the AI instinctively put the flaps down ?

I have not flown a P38 or a Spitfire, but if you are in a spin then you have stalled wings and flaps down will bring nothing in my opinion. It seems logical to think that as with flaps down you have better lift and so you can lower your stall speed. But here you have already fully stalled and are in a spin configuration which is a vertical descent with nearly no horizontal speed. Even one could argue that flaps down may keep you in spin as your speed will increase more slowly due to a braking effect the moment you will start applying power and trying to get out of your spin with the rudder. Slower speed means less effective rudder.

I saw a I-16 do that yesterday, he was alone with his flaps extended, randomly, at around 2500m. Two more of his flight were going home while he was erring with flaps.

He will never be able to tell us why.

Too much, or not enough vodka... can't be running too lean. Or too rich on that stuff ?
