Dusty_Steppes Posted January 31, 2023 Posted January 31, 2023 (edited) I use the GT Omega Prime cockpit with castors. The castors allow me to easily move it around for service and modification. It is located in the basement on a concrete floor. I was thinking of adding 4 bass shakers to it, but I was concerned about the noise level it might produce. I don't want to drop a couple of hundred dollars on a system that could interfere with someone sleeping in a room above the location. Does anyone know how much noise above the ambient noise level this would produce? Human voice level reference: Whisper: 30-40dB Normal Conversation: 60dB Scream: 80-125dB Edited January 31, 2023 by Dusty_Steppes Voice level reference added.
Drano Posted February 1, 2023 Posted February 1, 2023 They don't produce a lot of noise themselves. You can hear it but feel it more. The sound won't travel in the concrete floor much if at all, mine is on that too. If you were on a wood floor I'd think the vibrations would carry everywhere and be annoying to anyone else tho. I might find that out when I move my stuff from downstairs soon! 1

How loud (on a scale of human whisper, normal conversation, scream, or somewhere between those levels) is the base shaker produced sound level? I'm retired but my wife has to get up early to go to work and I do most of my flying after she has gone to sleep. My rig will be staying in the basement next to my workbench as it makes it easier to adjust, modify, and troubleshoot. The light source is also easily controlled (head tracking) plus the temperature is a fairly stable 65F year-round which helps to keep my pc cool. Thanks in advance!
Drano Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 If you're on a concrete floor she won't hear it unless she's in the room with you. The device is like the guts of a speaker. A speaker has a cone connected to the same kind of guts. When it vibrates the cone moves air to make the sound. This thing has no cone. It transfers the vibration to your chair/rig and you. I have a jet seat that vibrates and one butt kicker using the sim shaker software to configure the volumes of the effects and what goes to what. Most of the effects I have running to the seat. I use the butt kicker for things like guns and getting hit. Things that need a good thump. 1
DragonDaddy Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 Bass shakers can make parts of your cockpit vibrate and rattle if they are loose. The height adjustment on my chair would rattle if I didn’t have it dampened. Not a big deal and easy to remedy.
Drano Posted February 2, 2023 Posted February 2, 2023 True. I have mine tied up with a zip tie so it doesn't rattle.
Thorne Posted March 5, 2023 Posted March 5, 2023 If you're on concrete you should be good. Consider mounting the shakers to your chair/pedals/stick/whatever and isolated those from the frame with threaded isolators. That's what I've done - it makes a huge difference. In fact having built a five channel setup I would go so far as so say the isolation is actually the most important part.
