Question about the visibility of aircraft

I have been playing Il 2 since the oldest version. I stopped when BoS came out and have recently started again. I just miss the Pacific War. 

I vaguely remember that I used to be able to see the dots (planes) from further away. Now it's different somehow. It used to be about 3 km or more, I don't know exactly. Now the plane has completely disappeared after 1.5 km. That's very tedious, especially since the AI has super eyes.
So when B17 fly over me, I don't even see the condensation marks. Only when I get within 1.5 or 2 km do I suddenly see the condensation trails.

 

I can still see a car clearly in 3-4km in real life, so it should be the same with the plane.

 

Resolution is 1920*1080. Nvidia settings are unchanged and the SAS mod is running. 

Is there anything I can do? Does the iconscript also run in single player?

It has been a long time - but I think one of the *.ini files might have a setting?
