baevans Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 (edited) I had ROF back in the day, and despite being a rubbish pilot (not much time to practice) I accumulated a ridiculous collection of planes due to the frequent cheap sales. When I got a new computer with more powerful graphic processor, I tried to re-install it but could never get the install to work - some error with versions of Windows background supporting stuff. Gave up and got FC when it came out and went VR. Great fun. Still a rubbish pilot though. But a bit nostalgic for the early war planes, so I decided recently to see if the new "free" version would install. It did, and my e-mail was unchanged, so I could request a password reset and voila - my long list of planes was again mine. Dusted off my TrakIR, modified a copy of my Thrustmaster Cougar HOTAS FC profile for ROF so that my Buttons match my FC profile (I'm easily confused enough remembering what's where) and back in business in my early war planes. I miss the VR when in ROF but still, very pleased to have the variety. Edited January 26, 2023 by baevans
TG-55Panthercules Posted January 26, 2023 Posted January 26, 2023 Welcome back! I can't muster any enthusiasm for flying (RoF or anything else) on a monitor since I started flying IL-2 GB in VR, but I do find myself missing the breadth and variety that RoF still provides compared to Flying Circus in its current state. I especially miss the seaplanes and the early birds that haven't made it into FC yet. Hopefully one day (hope springs eternal).

I have the occasional trip back to RoF every now and then, see how I can do in my careers (still ongoing for years, lol).

Lol I do the same but I find the Se5a still sucks so it's back to farm tractor simulator or tuba practice.
mattdanison Posted January 29, 2023 Posted January 29, 2023 Thank you for saving all this ROF information. Being an old school Dynamix Red Baron kind of guy, ROF is the only computer game I play. Graphics, caimpaign mode, decent AI, that's all I need. Cheers!
jlan5031jlan5031 Posted February 15, 2023 Posted February 15, 2023 I've been away from ROF for about a year. When I tried to return yesterday, I found the game wasn't reading my control stick well. Though the settings for elevator work in settings, that doesn't transfer to the elevator movement in the aircraft model. There's a bit of weak flutter, but no response from joystick movement. Any ideas? Correction of above. All controls show correct movement but elevator.
jlan5031jlan5031 Posted February 16, 2023 Posted February 16, 2023 Correction of above. All controls show correct movement but elevator. After monkeying around now, the game does not even recognize my Thrustmaster joystick. Response pages are frozen in place. I have a total of five air sims and all of them work but ROF.

I don't know if there is a way to copy them from your old rig.

Searching the old RoF Forums for "side-by-side" will pull up several threads where this issue and the need for both the 2005 and 2008 versions is discussed. Unfortunately, many of the links to those versions found in those old threads no longer work. I found where I had posted the following on the old RoF Forums - I think these are still the latest versions: If I'm correctly interpreting the MS support pages, it appears that MS may have replaced the old downloads with new versions that have been patched for security reasons - you might want to check out the versions on these pages: 2005: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=14431 2008: https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/download/details.aspx?id=26368 The MS pages those link to are somewhat confusing/unclear, so you may want to read the instructions and related KB article(s) before deciding which specific file(s) to download.

That was (and perhaps still is) the case with the 2005 version, but IIRC one of the last updates a while back introduced the need for having the 2008 version as well, without including it in the install package, thus spawning all those threads about why people started having errors and needing to go get the 2008 version themselves. TBH I haven't tried installing RoF from scratch in quite a while now, so I'm not sure what the current state might be.
1PL-Husar-1Esk Posted February 17, 2023 Posted February 17, 2023 I believe also the package from il2 works.
baevans Posted February 21, 2023 Author Posted February 21, 2023 I can attest to this. Latest download installed without issues where as tho old one (several years ago before the “free” download) got the C++ error on my current windows 10 machine.
