DFLion_The Big Show_’We shoot-up Saint-Andre’

Being ‘Free French Pilots’ attached to the RAF, Pierre Clostermann sat down with his friend Jacques and planned a diversion on their next patrol over Normandy, just after ‘D’ Day.

Knowing the local countryside very well (they thought), they convinced Maxie Sutherland, their Squadron Leader, they could carry out a surprise strafing attack on the German held French airfield of ‘Saint-Andre’.

The weather was poor with storms and low cloud as they ‘peeled away’ from the main Squadron near Caen and headed to what they thought was ‘Saint-Andre’. They actually attacked ‘Dreux’ which was close to ‘Saint-Andre’.

Fly the mission and see how you go? Watch out for the flak and patrolling Luftwaffe fighters!

DFLion

PS Message for ‘Lemsip’ – you are very welcome to use this mission as a template to revise your excellent video of this mission that you have previously produced using the Bodenplatte Map.

Thank you for your mission.

I allow myself to notify you of some historical errors:

I think you have already read the book "The big show" by Pierre Clostermann?

The airfield attacked was indeed that of Saint-Andre de l'Eure and not that of Dreux!

Reread the chapter and you will see that it was Saint-Andre de l'Eure!

During the ingress, Pierre Clostermann (Spitfire coded LO-A MK611) and Jacques Remlinger (Spitfire coded LO-K  MJ305) fly over Lisieux and arrive above the airfield of Conches-en Ouches, not shown on the Normandy map of IL- 2GB.

Then they arrive near Saint Andre de l'Eure. They spot He-111s near a farm under camouflage netting and begin to attack...

What may have misled you is that when Clostermann goes to bed at night he has a doubt: "Was it Saint-Andre or Dreux?"

But it was Saint-Andre!
