kraut1 Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 Hi, I have a question: were BF110-G, Me210 or Me410 used in Italy from August 1943 (Sicily) to mid 1944? If yes as fighter bombers or as heavy fighters? I am interested because I am currently working on Vanders EMG settings for Italy43/44.
dbuile Posted January 22, 2023 Posted January 22, 2023 I did only a brief search, but I see ZG 1, ZG 2, and 2.(F)/122 had 110/210/410s, and were attached to Luftflotte 2 at the time. A good resource for each is here, including their Flugzeugbestand und Bewegungsmeldungen to see which sub-types: https://www.ww2.dk/air/zerstorer/zg1.htm https://www.ww2.dk/air/zerstorer/zg2.htm https://www.ww2.dk/air/recon/aufkl122.htm 1
357th_KW Posted January 24, 2023 Posted January 24, 2023 (edited) Those Zerstorer gruppen are a complicated topic, as they were largely disbanded, or turned into maritime units that wouldn't have been involved in Husky or Sardinia/Anzio/Rome etc I'll add some more details later when I can dig into a few other sources Edit: I did some digging through Chris Shores’ Mediterranean Air War books (day by day, war diary type breakdowns of the combats in the theater) and it appears that thr Bf110G’s of ZG1 and ZG26 were fairly active over Sicily as fighters and bomber interceptors during summer of 1943, but seem to disappear after the fall of Sicily. A handful of 210/410s were encountered in the reconnaissance role throughout 1943. Edited January 25, 2023 by 357th_KW 1
