Alternative Useful Materials Page

The new "official" Useful Materials Page is now available in the post above.

I had previously posted the links below as a temporary stop-gap until the official version was back up on the old RoF Forums - I'll repeat them here, since these are a compendium of unofficial links that people might find helpful if they have any problems with the official links.  (again, if you find that any of these links no longer work, please PM me and I'll be happy to try to fix them)

ROF - COMPENDIUM OF SKIN-RELATED THREADS AND INFO FROM THE OLD ROF FORUMS

This is a copy of a compendium I created many years ago to gather a bunch of formerly-stickied threads so folks would have one place to go to help them find the cool stuff that's available to help with the process of making and using skins for Rise of Flight.  I have removed some of the info that seemed obviously stale/outdated, but if you find any outdated or non-working links please PM me and I'll be happy to address such issues.

MIRRORS/SOURCES FOR SKIN PACK DOWNLOADS

Alternate Useful Materials Page: see post above in this thread

For other info, check out the following for some really good info and stuff related to RoF skinning.

Skin Pack FAQ

Hopefully, everything you wanted to know about how skins and skin packs work in RoF but didn't know where to ask:

see post below in this thread

NOTE - check out Q&A #8 for links to alternate skin packages of historical skins, organized by plane type, faction/alliance and beta career usage. Also now includes some alternate Fictional Skin Pack links.

Extra Skins for PWCG

Pat has created new packs that include every skin from all the various packs that are being used by PWCG.  There are 7 such new Pat Packs now, with the inclusion of the latest sets of 2-seater skins from Gooseh that were incorporated in PWCG v.3.0.2. These new packs are available on Pat's web site, here:  http://www.pwcampaignmanager.com/pwcg/web/PWCGRoF.php

At one point, Pat was missing one of the packs on his web site - it's the one I used to have as number 7, but I have renumbered it to be #8 so as not to disturb Pat's current numbering scheme.  It has about 2,600 of McMinstrel's second group of skins, and is available here in a JSGME-ready package:

http://www.mediafire.com/file/26zx68st1fas5yr/PWCG_Skins_-_Pat_Pack_8_%28McMinstrel_Group_2%29_for_JSGME.7z

[NOTE - there have been a bunch of new skins done (primarily by Gooseh) since this info was posted - I will update this post or add a separate post below in this thread once I figure out how best to gather the info about all these new PWCG-related skins over here.]

Skin Management Tools and Information

Laser's fabulous Skin Management Tool (current version is beta04) is available at the link below as well as in the post below in this thread (see Q&A #7 in the FAQ mentioned above for summary/details about how this tool can be used - much more detail in the post below in this thread).

Download Laser's Skin Management Tool:

http://www.mediafire...anager_Beta.zip

Download a pack I made of re-sized preview picture files that fixes a problem Laser's tool had with displaying some preview pictures where the files were too big - this is a JSGME-ready package with all of the 2,000+ re-sized preview picture files for all of the approved skins from the latest Official Skin Pack and all 18 Volumes of the Historical and Fun/Fictional Skin Packs:

http://www.mediafire...or_JSGME(2).zip

Just unzip it into your MODS folder, and use JSGME to activate it.  Now when you use Laser's Skin management tool you should be able to see the preview pictures that were previously being distorted/garbled.

Where to save skins to (for unapproved/pre-approved skins)

The official/approved skin packs should have placed the skins and preview pictures in the correct folders automatically.  However, if you want to use some custom skins that were not included in the official/approved skin packs, you should place them into the folders noted below (and of course, any such unapproved skins will only be visible if you play with "MODs on").

Skin files should be placed in the relevant/appropriate folders based on plane type, as noted below (the first part may vary slightly depending upon where you installed RoF):

RoFskinfolders.jpg.74c77cea41284151e9f448903917aa8f.jpg

Preview pictures (the little thumbnails that show when you select the skins on the hangar screen) should be placed inside the "Skins" folders underneath the relevant plane type folders, as noted below (again, the first part may vary slightly depending upon where you installed RoF):

How to move skin files to another drive (to save space)

see post below in this thread

How to Change Generic Aircraft Type Default Skins

This is actually quite easy to do. Here is a small Mod I made for myself, which substitutes a couple of my fictional squadron default skins for the game's normal default skins for the Albatros D.III and D.Va aircraft types:

http://www.mediafire...s_for_JSGME.zip

If you explore inside this mod folder, you will see how you can do the same thing for any other plane type - just create a folder under Rise of Flight\data\graphics\planes that has the same folder name as the corresponding aircraft type folder under Rise of Flight\data\graphics\skins, then create a folder under that called "textures", and in that textures folder put a copy of the skin file that you want to be the new default skin for that plane type. Be sure to rename the skin file to the same file name as the corresponding aircraft type folder name (e.g., "AlbatrosD3.dds"). You can do this with as many or as few aircraft types as you'd like, and if you use JSGME to activate the mods (as you always should) it will be very easy to de-activate them and return to the game's normal default skins whenever you want to.

You can of course do this with any skin, fictional or historical. And, of course, you must be running in "mods on" mode to be able to see the new default skins in the game.

I sometimes use mods like this when I'm flying careers, to simulate flying with (and sometimes against, since I have different paint schemes for each country) my own fictional squadrons.

for someone who runs RoF from small SSD drive, this should be useful. I had a problem that with more and more planes and skins, RoF became quite huge game. A run it from 60GB SSD due to performance but I was going out of space (there are Win7 with their nice "winsx feature" so there was less and less free space)

0 - I assume RoF in installed in c:\games\RoF (so replace directory with your directory)
I have Czech windows but it's just translation - it will look same on any other language
1 - move entire c:\games\RoF\data\graphics\Skins directory to other drive (e.g. to root of d: drive so there will be d:\Skins (1) with many subdirectories (2))

2 - run cmd as admin (click on Start (1), type cmd (2), right click on it (3) and select Run as Administrator (4))

3 - create symbolic link with this command (1) : mklink /D c:\games\RoF\data\graphics\Skins d:\Skins
—-you should get confirmation that link was created. Note that if there are spaces in path, you have to use "[whole path]"!

4 - check link exists (in ..RoF/data/graphics folder, there will be "shortcut-like" directory (1))

5 - thats it! Run the game and enjoy free space /forum/public/style_emoticons/phpbb/icon_e_smile.gif

Hope this will help someone…

[NOTE - additional info posted by ericleroi  :  There's a neat utility called SteamMover which works for things other than Steam files as well. It has an intuitive front end which makes using it straight forward. It will create the symbolic links and also move the files for you. It's very easy to backout out also. I use it a lot, typically when I'm moving games with long load times to/from my space restricted SSD.]

Roundels and Crosses - Becoming an efficient WWI pilot in Flying Circus (or Rise of Flight)

THIS INFO HAS BEEN COPIED/PASTED FROM THE OLD ROF FORUMS.  It's from several years ago, and I'm not sure if it's still completely current/accurate - if anybody knows otherwise, please PM me and I'll be happy to fix/update this information.

Some people have offered and are still offering to the WW1 community in various ways. Below is my attempt to provide a guide that could prove useful to a new and even to a not so new player. It is all I would try to teach a new pilot before I take him to combat.

Please tolerate with any mistakes you might find. I am not a writer nor a professional pilot. And please remember that in certain parts of the book I express my own opinions which might not be universally accepted.

I still hope that by reading it a pilot will have an easier time in the WW1 virtual skies. Enjoy it!

Roundels and Crosses - Becoming and efficient WWI pilot in Flying Circus

At this point, I need to offer the appropriate credits to Johan Kylander’s book ‘In Pursuit: A Pilot’s Guide to Online Air Combat’, published in 2006. I had read this wonderful work back in 2011 and it had heavily influenced the way I treat the online air combat simulation gaming. This book had been my inspiration and primary reference material for ‘Roundels and Crosses’. Sections talking about the fear of the online death and of the online pilot’s psychology are mirroring Johan Kylander’s writings and in various pages one will find ideas very similar to the ones found ‘In Pursuit’. I do not claim the originality of those ideas and I have the sincere hope that I have treated ‘In Pursuit’ with the due respect. This paragraph has also been inserted in the introduction of the Roundels and Crosses. Thank you No56_Badger85 for pointing out my omission and for urging me to correct it.

Mod Search and Removal Tool

Sometime it may happen that user installed a mod for ROF and forgot about it after some time.
Of course, if you play "mods off" then it is not a problem, but then, once you turn them on again some unexpected surprises may happen.

I've made a small utility that looks for modded files in ROF and optionally delete some of them. Deletion should be safe but use at your own risk.

In terms of ROF a mod is any file that has the same name as one of standard game files from gtp archives.

Just extract the archive into ROF main folder and run ModSearch.

No, it is for ROF only, because it loads ROF-specific data format to decide which files are mods.
I don't know if anything like this can be made for IL-2 as I don't play that game much and don't know how mods work there.

Panther's Alternative Historical/Fictional Skin D/L Packages

THIS INFO HAS BEEN COPIED/PASTED FROM THE OLD ROF FORUMS.  It's from several years ago, and I'm not sure if it's still completely current/accurate - if anybody knows otherwise, please PM me and I'll be happy to fix/update this information.

Originally posted by Panthercules:

Since I had to be updating my previous alternative packs anyway as a result of the latest patch/update release, I thought I might as well collect them all in this one place for convenience.

If you have the time, patience and hard drive space, I recommend that you simply download and install the latest Official Skin pack (UPDATED - version 1.033 now available) and all of the approved Community Historical Skin Packs from the links on the "Useful Materials" page (which is linked to at the top of every Forum page).

However, some folks have expressed a desire for some more focused or specialized versions/collections of these approved skins to make it a bit easier to install and use only certain portions of these skins in their RoF installations from time to time.

Therefore, I have created a series of alternative skin packages, organized in various ways, that people might find useful.

Please NOTE - these are just subsets of the approved official and historical skins already included in the standard skin packs featured on the Useful Materials page - if you already have installed all of those packs, you do not need to bother with these additional Panther Packs.

Some of the packages below only go through version 1.031/Volume 15 or earlier at this point, while some are up to date through 1.033/Volume 17 - I will be updating the others below with new links to the latest version skins as soon as I get a chance, but upload speeds are slow here so it may be a while.

[NOTE - since some folks have been reporting problems D/L'ing the recent Skin Packs (Official, Historical and Fictional) from the Useful Materials page links, I have added alternate links to these packs below - see Groups 4 and 5 below. And since someone asked, I've also included a new Group 6 below with the Community Fictional Skins organized by plane type.]

NOTE - new Group 8 added below with alternate links to all the Skin Templates (.psd files for creating new skins)

Group 1 - Historical Skins Organized by Aircraft Type:

Set forth below are links to a new set of "Panther Packs" I have created and posted here for anybody that wants them - there is one Panther Pack for each aircraft type, and each pack contains all the historical skins for that aircraft type from the Official Skin Pack and all 15 Volumes of Community Historical Skin packs released so far. These may be good choices for those who don't have all the planes purchased yet and (perhaps because of bandwidth or HDD space limitations) may want to focus on having just the skins for the planes they own, and don't want to download all the skin packs to get them. To reduce file size (since that's kind of the point here), I've had to use 7-zip format, so you will probably need to get the 7-zip program (free download - Google it) in order to decompress these.

The Panther Packs below are designed to be used with JSGME (just unzip into your MODS folder), or you can install them manually if you're not using JSGME (or if you need to save the HDD space - using JSGME is convenient but doubles the drive space needed when using these packs). The packs contain both the skin files and the preview pictures, and will work in Mods Off mode since they are the approved skins out of the approved skin packs.

All Panther Packs in this Group 1 have been updated/redone so they have all the relevant skins from the Official Pack for 1.031 and Volumes 1-15 of the Community Historical Packs.   (May be updated later to reflect more recent pack releases)

Group 7 - Captured Skins Panther Pack:

This JSGME-ready package contains all known "captured" skins approved for "mods off" use. Players who do not want to keep these skins installed on their PC (because they do not want to encounter them being flown improperly in MP games) can activate this package via JSGME before flying missions specifically designed for use of captured planes (and then deactivate it again afterwards):

Skin Pack FAQ - Helpful Info About Installing Skin Packs

THIS INFO HAS BEEN COPIED/PASTED FROM THE OLD ROF FORUMS.  It's from several years ago, and I'm not sure if it's still completely current/accurate - if anybody knows otherwise, please PM me and I'll be happy to fix/update this information.

Maybe this info will help reduce the number of questions/problems players post about how the skin pack installation process works.

Q1. Why do I only have a few choices of skins for my planes?

A1. Because of the number of skins available and the size of the downloads, the skins have been split out from the game/patch files to make it easier on players with slower Internet connections or bandwidth limitations. In order to have more skin choices in game, you will need to download and install the additional "skin packs" which are available, as described below.

Q2. Why do some skin previews in the Hangar menu screens only show black rectangles?

A2. Skin preview files used to be in .jpg format, but starting with Patch release 1.022 the devs changed to using .dds format for the preview picture files (to improve memory usage, IIRC). After that changeover, the old .jpg preview files no longer work in game. Skins which still have the old .jpg format preview pictures will show up as black rectangles when you mouse over them in the Hangar menu view (as will any unapproved skins that don't have any form of preview picture at all, which may happen with some skins you might download separately from the forum posts instead of via the approved skin packs). All skin packs released after that switch-over (e.g., Volumes 10 and later) already have the preview pictures in the new .dds format. The previously-released Community Skin Packs (Volumes 9 and earlier) were not updated to change their preview pictures, so they still have the old .jpg pictures in them. Instead of updating all the earlier packs individually (and making you download them again), the devs provided a handy .jpg-to-.dds converter/installer, located here:  http://www.mediafire.com/download/buomyxvvv74b4jh/RoF_-_1.022_.dds_preview_files_converter.zip  . When you run that converter, it should automatically replace all the old .jpg preview pictures with new ones in the new .dds format, and you should be able to see them correctly on the in-game Hangar screens. You only need to run this converter once (after you have installed Skin Pack Volumes 1-9; if you later install any of those volumes, you may need to run the converter again).

Q3. What Skin Packs are available and where do I get them?

A3. The skins which have been approved for use in the game's "MODS OFF" mode (more on that later) are organized into three (3) groups:

"Official Skin Packs"
"Community Historical Skin Packs"
"Community Fictional Skin Packs"

All of these Skin Packs can be downloaded from links found in the Useful Materials posts above in this thread.

NOTE - be sure you're downloading the "Skin Packs", NOT the "Templates"  - the latter are used by skinners to create skins, and are not the skins themselves.

Q4. Which Skin Packs Do I Need?

A4. It's up to you - you can use them all or as many as you want. Here's what they are and how they work.

"Official Skin Packs" - these contain the skins done or commissioned by the devs and officially released with each new Patch release (or at least any new Patch which adds a new flyable aircraft to the game). These packs are cumulative, so each one contains all the "Official" skins previously released. Therefore, you only need to download and install the latest version of the Official pack - you do not need to get any of the previous versions. (NOTE - if you already have an older version of the Official Skin Pack installed, that's OK. You can, but do not need to, uninstall it - it works fine if you just install the latest Official Pack on top of the older pack if you want to.)

"Community Historical Skin Packs" - these contain historical skins of actual WWI aircraft that have been created by the RoF player community and approved by 777 for use in "MODS OFF" mode. Because so many skins have been created, a single download file would be HUGE, so these have been kept in individual skin packs, which are NOT cumulative. Therefore, each Historical Skin Pack Volume contains different skins, and if you want all the historical skins available you will need to download and install all of the Historical Skin Pack Volumes. Sometimes, errors are discovered or new historical research/info becomes available and a few of the historical skins have been updated to incorporate those fixes. Because some packs contain fixes/corrections to some of the skins in earlier packs, you should install these packs in numerical order, earliest to latest.

"Community Fictional Skin Packs" - these contain fictional skins created by players to represent their personal skins or those of fictional squadrons, or perhaps to recreate skins that have been seen in some of the popular movies about WWI aviation. There are way too many of these skins to fit comfortably into a single download file, so like the Historical packs they are NOT cumulative and you will need to download and install them all if you want them all.

Q5. How can I find out which skins are in which Skin Pack Volumes without downloading them all?

A5. I have created combined "Readme" files (one for Historical, and one for Fictional) which contain all the information in the readme files that accompanied each Community Skin Pack Volume release (the Historical one also includes the readme info from the Official Skin Pack). You can download those files here, and search through them to see which skins were included in which packs (now updated for 1.033 and Volume 19 release)

Historical:  http://www.mediafire.com/file/e2j8b81d233zbtn/RoF_-_Combined_Readme_-_Historical_-_OSP_and_Vol.1-19.zip

Fictional:  http://www.mediafire.com/file/59hf2y9psudowc4/RoF_-_Combined_Readme_-_Fictional-_Vol.1-19.zip

Please keep in mind - when you're searching the combined readme files you still need to check through all the packs listed in the document to make sure that the skin you find in an earlier pack wasn't fixed/updated in a later pack (that didn't happen a lot, but it did happen - for example, the Werner Voss Dr.1 skin in Historical Volume 7 was replaced by an updated/corrected version in Volume 11, so the one from Volume 7 no longer works in Mods Off mode).

Q6. How do the skin packs work - how do I install them?

A6. The skin packs are executable files which will automatically install the skin files and the associated preview picture files for you.  (Some of the links use .zip files with the .exe files inside - just unzip the .exe files to some temp location and then run the .exe files).  Once you've downloaded a skin pack file and saved it on your hard drive somewhere, all you have to do is run the .exe file. IMPORTANT - during the installation process, it will ask you where you want to install the files - it will pre-populate the location with the default place it expects most people to have installed RoF - if you have installed your game to some other folder (e.g., "C:\Games\Rise of Flight"), you will need to point the installer to your actual RoF installation folder (your main "Rise of Flight" folder) - otherwise, the installed will put the skin files somewhere else and you will not see them in your game.  [NOTE - a couple of the alternate links to these skin packs may use JSGME-ready .zip files rather than self-installing executable .exe files - if so, they are clearly marked as such]

Q7. Maybe I don't want to use ALL the skins - How can I manage which skins I use?

A7. The above-described process will install all the skins in the skin packs directly into your RoF game installation. If you want to use only some of the skins (perhaps you only want to use your own set of personal/fictional skins and maybe some of those for squadrons you typically fly with or against in multi-player games), there are some ways to manage which skins you use.

My favorite way is to install each skin pack into a separate, "dummy" folder location I create just for that purpose, such as "C:\RoF Skins\CHSP_Vol_1" etc. The installer then creates all the necessary subfolders and puts all the skin and preview picture files in the right place in that "dummy" folder as if it were the main RoF folder, which makes it very easy to turn that "dummy" folder into a JSGME-ready "mod" so I can use JSGME to install and uninstall to and from my real RoF game folders whenever I want.

If I want to further manage the skins within the skin packs (as I do with the fictional ones, as I only tend to use my own personal skins since I don't play MP at this point), I use Laser's great Skin Manager tool (download the tool here:  http://www.mediafire.com/download/gr4662ys93pulyf/Rof_-_Laser_Skin_Manager_Beta.zip  ) to create another JSGME-ready "mod" with all the personal/fictional skins I want to use, and then use JSGME to install and uninstall them in my actual RoF game folders whenever I want.

Keeping the skins separate from your RoF game install like this takes up a lot of extra hard drive space, but it makes it easier (for me at least) to manage my skins, and it also means that they are kept safely separate from my game installation itself, so if for some reason I hose up my game install during a patch or testing or whatever, my skins don't get hosed up too and I can put them into the new installation very easily using JSGME.

Q8. I'm having trouble downloading the skin packs - are there any "unofficial" alternatives to D/L'ing the approved skin packs that might work better for me?

A8. YES - see the alternate Useful Materials post above in this thread

Q9. What's the significance of "MODS OFF" versus "MODS ON" and why "approved skins"?

A9. Largely in order to preserve the integrity of the multiplayer game (avoid certain forms of cheating/abuse), the devs created two modes of play - "MODS OFF" does not allow/recognize player-altered files (which is why it's used by most MP servers), and "MODS ON" does. Custom/player-created skins are treated as "mods" by the game, so the devs created a submission/approval process whereby player-created skins could be integrated into the game and be used in "MODS OFF" mode. Therefore, the skins in the "Official", "Historical" and "Fictional" skin packs CAN be used and seen in "MODS OFF" mode (by anybody who has installed the skin - if anybody hasn't installed a particular skin, they will see a default skin in its place). Other player-created skins that you might download from posts in the forums or elsewhere, that have not come from one of the approved Skin Packs, will only be able to be used/seen in "MODS ON" mode.

I hope the above information helps prevent hiccups and smooths the experience of using all these great skins that folks have created - they really add immensely to the enjoyment of the game. Feel free to post any other ideas for additional FAQs and I'll consider adding them to the above.

Beta Skin Manager for Rise of Flight (beta04)

THIS INFO HAS BEEN COPIED/PASTED FROM THE OLD ROF FORUMS.  It's from several years ago, and I'm not sure if it's still completely current/accurate - if anybody knows otherwise, please PM me and I'll be happy to fix/update this information.

Latest copy of this tool (beta 04) can be found here:   http://www.mediafire.com/download/gr4662ys93pulyf/Rof_-_Laser_Skin_Manager_Beta.zip

Also, you can download a pack I made of re-sized preview picture files that fixes a problem Laser's tool had with displaying some preview pictures where the files were too big - this is a JSGME-ready package with all of the 2,000+ re-sized preview picture files for all of the approved skins from the latest Official Skin Pack and the first 18 Volumes of the Historical and Fun/Fictional Skin Packs:

http://www.mediafire.com/download/gieusykmgawyvkg/Panthers_re-sized_RoF_preview_pictures_for_JSGME(2).zip

Just unzip it into your MODS folder, and use JSGME to activate it.  Now when you use Laser's Skin management tool you should be able to see the preview pictures that were previously being distorted/garbled.

It's a beta, so i appreciate feedback.

skinmanager.thumb.jpg.5df4cadebd767467f24c639eec98ddc6.jpg

Version 1.0 beta4 NOTES:

Unlike historical or fictional skins, the official skins have more 'ambiguous' names (e.g. can be something like 110201.dds), which can match more than one preview dds (i.e. belonging to a different plane, in a different preview folder), especially if you don't update the skin-preview match pairs, as the Skin Manager help mentions.

<RoF>/data/graphics/skins/<Plane type>/ is not the same as <RoF>/data/swf/planes/<Plane type>/ (which you can see by reading in Skin Manager the paths above a displayed dds preview image). So for each 'new' planes, new skin-preview match helper pairs should be added in Skin Manager, to better guide the program in finding the correct previews. For the Halb you should add 2 new pairs:

HalberstadtCL2:Halberstadt CL.II
HalberstadtCL2au:Halberstadt CL.II 200hp

When multiple previews are found for a skin, they will be all shown. There we'll just have to scroll down eventually until we found the right plane type -> that's the right skin for it.

In the case of the Pfalz D12, by mistake the Pfalz D12 and the Pfalz D3a have their match pairs REVERSED, so it should be corrected to:

PfalzD3a:Pfalz D.IIIa
PfalzD12:Pfalz D.XII

Unlike the JSGME tool, this one assumes you know something about how skins are arranged in RoF when installed. But, a short howto would be:

Point the
SkinManager program to your main RoF installation folder (e.g. C:\Games\Rise of Flight). All installed skins (normally found in the <RoF folder>/data/graphics/Skins/<aircraft name>/*.dds) would show up in the main list of SkinManager. These skins normally have a preview image (normally in <RoF folder>/data/swf/planes/<aircraft name>/Skins/*.jpg) which will be shown when you click on a skin. Those are exactly the paths where skins go, if you remember those you understand how skins are arranged in RoF.

Now if you tick/mark/check one, some or all of the
skins in the list, you can copy those to a different folder, 'backup' them (archive - very slow operation) or delete them. You can use copy and then delete on a 'set' to achieve a 'move' operation.

In the worse case you can delete a
ll skins from the RoF install, after that you can reinstall the skins only from the packs you want (e.g. 'official', 'historical' but maybe not the fun ones). Now if you would want only SOME of the fun category skins, you could fake-install from the packs those skins to a different folder (not the real RoF one), point SkinManager to that folder, select only those fun skins you like, and copy those to the real RoF folder. Then you can delete the 'fake' (temporary) folder.

When i say 'install from p
acks' i mean the normal operation, outside SkinManager, which you already used to install the skins as before. But when i say copy, delete i mean inside SkinManager, for all the 'checked' skins. The folder you load in SkinManager is a source for copy operations, and the target of the delete operation.

Actually, you can use this tool to help you create "mini skin packs" or groups of skins that you can then use JSGME with to very easily swap them in and out of your actual RoF install, if you want to (as if they were mods, as far as JSGME knows, although they'll still be aproved skins so you won't have to have "mods on" checked to be able to see them).

For example, let's say you want to create a special "Les Hellequins" squadron mini-pack that you would use JSGME to install into your game folders before you go online to fly with (or against) that squadron.

First, install all the official. fun and historical skin packs (or at least all that you want) into a dummy/extra set of RoF folders. (You'll only have to do this once - you can keep using this dummy/extra set of folders to keep installing any additional newly-released packs into so you'll always have all the skins in this one set of folders, if you have a big enough hard drive).

Second, point Laser's tool at the dummy RoF folder where you installed all those skin packs, and it will display all the possible skins. Use the search function of the tool, or go through it manually however you want, and select/tick all the HQ skins you want to have in your JSGME-ready HQ squadron mini-pack "mod".

Use Laser's tool here to copy all the selected skins, not into your main RoF game install, but into another dummy folder which you have created. That new folder will become the "mod" that you will use with JSGME to swap in and out of your real RoF game installation just like you would any other JSGME mod folder.

You can repeat that process as many times as you want, creating whatever kinds of JSGME-ready mini-packs you want to have, with any combination of the "Official", "Fun" or "Historical" skins - for example, you could create one such mini-pack for each plane type (each with all the official and historical skins for just that plane type), and use JSGME to swap those in and out depending on what type of plane you plan to fly in the next game session.

I've not heard or seen anything indicating that the large number of skins causes any problems with RoF's performance, but this tool makes it very easy to create the JSGME-ready "mods" that would then let you use JSGME (also a fantastic tool, of course) to vastly reduce the number of skins you have actualy installed in your RoF game folders at any one time, while still having them readily available for future play.

Some folks seemed to be having trouble figuring out how to make this great tool work, so I posted some screenshots in another thread, and then decided maybe they should be here too since people may come to this thread looking for help, so here they are (these are for the beta 04 version):

All you have to do is browse to your main RoF directory (see illustrations below), and then the tool will automatically pull up all the skins it finds installed under that directory and let you start manipulating them:

Laser1.thumb.jpg.02304d43e59cb48e279f9e57a00381ad.jpg

Laser2.jpg.0fd12e2b4a6da01eb8f758a9ce105428.jpg

Laser3.jpg.ecafd8cf3a30d160c5e2dc085bd6bdec.jpg

etc. till you get to your main RoF directory (…\Rise of Flight), at which point you click "OK" and you get to this screen:

Laser4.thumb.jpg.47c51b424c34afbc7f7ef72e8fbb2f55.jpg

And BTW - if you're not seeing previews for some of the planes, it's probably because your helper list needs to be updated to add the newer plane types that have been released since the tool was created - see the sequence below for tips on how to do that:

Laser5.thumb.jpg.66a727b9d42b38af09f807f724d329b4.jpg

Clicking on the little button with "…" on it to the far right of that line brings up this screen (which you can resize to make it easier):

Laser6.jpg.ca4b3ddf98a2fee2269a2685eb92bf0b.jpg

As you will see, this is a list that tells the program for every skin folder, where to find the corresponding preview pictures folder (skin folder names on the left, preview folder names on the right).

Mouse over the buttons on the top and they'll tell you what they are for - clicking on the "Add" button brings you to the bottom of the list, where you can type in the new entries needed (just click "OK" when finished):
