I understand that, even though the earliest career start date is June 1941, Pat has engineered the a/c set, mission types, etc. so that June 1941 actually represents May/June 1940 in a PWCG career, so that we get a bit of Dunkirk followed by BoB and thereafter into Rhubarbs, Circuses and Rodeos, etc.

I have enjoyed playing these pivotal and legendary battles/encounters from both sides, but now that I'm in late 1941 (accordong to PWCG), I'm wondering where I am in history?

Does late 1941 in game actually represent late 1940 in history, or does the game 'catch up' with history at some point?

I ask, because I'm wondering when my Hurricane Mk. IIa's will become IIb's, IIc's and then Typhoons or Spits, and when I might expect to see 190A's.

Late 1941 is the continuation of the nighttime blitz.  Starting on Oct 1 1941 (start of Moscow) you are in the correct time frame.   The LW has mostly moved east.   Dieppe is the signature event in the west in 1942.

1942  is 1942 (and everything thereafter) is the real timeline ... FW190s Typhoons and Spitfire Vs will appear in 1942.

Thanks, Pat.

So, 1st October 1941 is when the game reverts to historical timeframe.

Got it.

Just a further clarification:

  • 30th September 1941 in game = 30th September 1940 in history
  • 1st October 1941 in game = 1st October 1941 in history

So, in effect, we 'lose' a year in game from 1st October 1940 to 1st October 1941.

Given that my Hurri career is now on 8th November 1941, which is historical 8th November 1941, shouldn't the squadron be on Mk.IICs or at least Mk.IIBs doing ground attack only and be facing Fw 190 A-3s masquerading as A-1s (given that there is no A-1 in game and that the A-3 wasn't yet in service)?

The Spitfire Vb's and Bf 109 F-4s I see in game at this time are now historically correct and are no longer representing earlier versions of those types that Il2 does not have, right?

I don't make them pure attack squadrons.  On Oct 1 1941 a couple of Hurricane squadrons go 60/40 Fighter/Raider and a couple go 40/60 FIghter/Raider

Fair enough, Pat, although I think it might be more accurate to switch the Hurri squadrons to 100% GA by late 1941.

When should we see Mk.IIBs and Cs and Fw 190s then? At the moment 56 Sqn. is still on IIAs and the German fighters are all still F2s.

Honestly don't know what the difference between an A, B, and C is.  F2s would be the norm in late 1941.  The move to F4s is just introduced in Oct 1941 and replacement of F2s takes awhile.

IIAs retained the 8x.303s of the Is; IIBs had 12x.303s; IICs had 2x20mm Hispano cannon; IIDs had 2x40mm cannon for AT use.

I can dig out the respective intro dates and numbers that featured in GB/France in 1941, if it's of interest.  IIRC most of the Mk.II Hurris went further afield, leaving the Spits to deal with GB/France until the Typhoon was introduced later as a tactical a/c.

Fine on the F2s, but shouldn't the 190s be in play by late 1941 in France?
