343KKT_Kintaro Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 I've seen this mention several times, so as an example only, here, on the second image, please see the mention "New Skydome Technology". What exactly is the "skydome technology"?
AEthelraedUnraed Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 See update 4.703 from way back in March:: Quote The final big piece to this important update is the new and improved rendering technology of our Sky-dome. This new approach results in a more natural looking and varied sky with a physics-based approach to sky colors etc. There are other significant improvements that come along with it such as improved lighting, less 'banding' of the sky and realistic placement of heavenly bodies based on the location of the map. Couple this new sky with our recently improved clouds and the resulting picture becomes a lot more realistic and truer to life that rivals any combat or non-combat sim product out there. 1 1
Jaws2002 Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Yep. What AEthelraedUnraed said. Quote from developer diary #316: " While we continue to work to finish several aircraft for BON and FC2, we would like to take a moment to show you something else we’ve been working on- our new sky technology! Many of you have complained in the past about “banding” that occurs in our sky-dome, especially as light begins to fade late in the day and at night. We agree that this was not ideal and we have decided to do something about it. We have now adopted a more physics-based technology that has more or less become an industry standard these days. Before we had more of an artistic approach, but it had some limitations as many of you pointed out. The new sky is meant to simulate the sky on a round globe and we have adapted it to our engine. The results are pretty nice. The end result should be no banding, including the glow around the moon. This should give you a more realistic picture. " The world in the game engine is flat and the new technology tries to simulate the "globe look" better than before. It did make a big difference at dawn and sunset. 1
Avimimus Posted January 7, 2023 Posted January 7, 2023 Unfortunately they 'fixed' the blue snow... which means that the new lighting system really represents warmer/overcast winter lighting conditions... on the colder days the ice crystals (especially if the snow is fresh) should reflect the blue colour of a cloudless the sky, giving everything a blue tint. It'd be really nice if we could get such a lighting option to represent midwinter 1 2
RyanR Posted January 8, 2023 Posted January 8, 2023 It's pretty phenomenal, but left to its own devices, the game won't take advantage of the extremes. Since I've been dabbling with PWCG, the weather can be pretty bad, yet it look stunning. -Ryan 1
343KKT_Kintaro Posted January 8, 2023 Author Posted January 8, 2023 (edited) Thank you guys, thanks a bunch, all responses were useful, especially Trooper's... yet except from SeaSerpent's. I mistrust this guy. As a consequence I know I need to do the opposite of what he says. Yeah, I'll eat tons of that yellow stuff he said... after all, Americans invented yellow mustard... must be something similar... yeah... mmmm...
