As a general rule, the ai tend to pick the easiest target. If you are on your own and the rest of your flight staying together, it makes sense to go after you. The issue may be that the AI don't see 3 other planes heading after you and thinking "perhaps they've got this covered, I'll look else where". If I stick closer in formation at the merge or try to put my AI cannon fodder (sorry, wingmen) between the enemy and me, I tend not to get singled out. Also try not to be last man standing as obviously, they will all target you then. It does still happen on the Moscow map when I tend t obe in the slowere plane and my home field is close, reducing AI skill level seems to reduce their thirst for blood and they are more inclined to let you go, especially if you keep changing direction.

I also think the last release seems to have reduced the AI's desire to fight to very end, but that might just be the very few career missions I have flown since then.
