Constructive criticism for IL2

I only got back "in" recently (was on a mac for over a decade) and let me start with "Bravo" - love the sim, I will be eternally grateful to you for bringing that flight model and a Typhoon, Tempest, Dora, a decent damage model, etc...  I have thought of some moderate constructive criticism for the development of the game. I would say mostly centered on use case - as in "older gamers with a family, a job, and not as much time to enjoy this sim"

 

-Time to destination: Honestly a lot of missions require 20 minutes of flying super far doing nothing (autopilot, time x8) and waste a lot of fun play time. Some of us have little time to devote to playing games and every minute counts ? I get the realism requirement, but if there could be a "get me to the action" mode for careers and missions that would be very cool. I mean as long as the plane is intact, etc... Where's the harm ? I know there's instant action but it's not at all the same as a mission / career path. 

 

- Career mode: If I had a penny for each time my pilot goes to next day, nothing happens that day, next day again, nothing happens, etc.. it takes sometimes 5 solid minutes of clicking around before I can actually get to a real mission in career mode. Again, if you built in realistic pauses in the fight to mimic the war that's cool, but maybe a tad overkill ? a mode where you can have career missions "now" would be awesome.

  

-Boats:  Love the Normandy map, V1 shooting etc, but man are those harbors empty !!! Wouldn't it be cool to sometimes strafe a destroyer or a u boat ? Never seen one.

 

-Flak attack : Thinking typhoon here, I think the coolest missions would be attacking an airport or flak site that is super well defended, with A LOT of visible flak bursts all around you, and a high chance of damage. I find the existing flak easily avoided with some rudder action, and relatively sparse, is it a CPU limitation ? Those missions would be awesome if possible..  Also maybe seeing planes trying to take off when you attack, you can pretty much fly over enemy airfields and camp there al day shooting stuff.. 

 

-Planes upside down ?  At times I see 109s in particular, mid combat, just lazily start flying upside down for no reason and hang there (easy pickings).. AI issue ? 

 

-Damage model: IMO flying a damaged plane home is THE coolest thing one can do on a sim. Not sure how much more you can do there but any further improvements would be welcome... I've had engine and fuel tank damage that let me fly for way too long after the fact. Also some fires that may have been stoppable with fuel shutoff but were not...  Conversely I've had damaged plane landings that looked eminently survivable but resulted in dead pilots, unsure why... Either way, focusing on even better plane damage and management thereof would be so, so cool.. 

 

Anyway, thanks again to the developers, awesome sim !!

Make sure the speed of the mission (in days) is set to whatever suits. Realistic, fast or whatever.

There'll be more and more content added I would imagine, it's just a matter of time (and also practicality in accomodating the overload onto some machines/PC's).

Make sure you have enemy efficiency cranked. You can tune these factors in more detail with something like PWCG (Pat Wilsons Campaign Generator) in which you can do a lot more technical stuff than the game's own QMB's you load off've the maps for Quick Missions.

Difficulty settings before you start any Quick Mission. Set the AI to ACE and it should be more challenging.

Constantly improving. It's an ongoing project and there's always te case of 'you can please some of the people all of the time, all of the people some of the time but...'.
