How do you create ground fire near the front lines?

When flying scripted campaign missions I often see machine gun fire going back and forth near the front lines. It looks cool and really adds life to the missions. I don't see it actually coming from any units though, how is this accomplished? I assumed it was something from the Effects list in the FMB but I can't see anything like that.

Not sure about an effects list but you can make a group to set an MG to fire at a hidden enemy object. Add a timer in to give a break between firing or something random. The target must nit be destructible so the MG keeps firing.

Ground fire does come from a Linked Entity object (gun, vehicle, ship, etc.) placed on the map

If you place a machine gun or vehicle with an "Attack Area" command object linked to it, you can set the Attack Area to "Attack Ground" and it does not need a target to fire at.

If you set it to "Attack Ground Target", it will only fire at enemy linked entities

If the Attack Area radius is large, it will fire in various directions, and the smaller it is, the more concentrated fire you will get.

If you set the Attack area near the ground, it will fire straight ahead

If you set the Attack area up in the air, it will shoot all over the place.

You can spend hours setting up ground battles that spawn, despawn, shoot at each other, move around, destroy objectives, you name it.

Oh yeah, looking at it again in one of the Wind of Fury missions I do see the machine guns down there. The reason I was thinking it was just an effect is because the MGs doing the shooting had no icons. I've just learned why, I did not know about naming things NOICON.

Thanks for the assist gents.

Your welcome

You can also use FARICON, which is fairly self explanatory
