Motherboard for LGA 1700 and DDR5 5600 mHz with XMP?

Recommended Posts

Posted (edited)

I am trying to find a suitable motherboard for an i9 12900k LGA 1700 CPU and DDR5 5600 mHz.

This as i installed the 4th new BIOS version on a Gigabyte Aorus z690 ULTRA, and the PC won't start above 4800 mHz (default and without XMP).

Thinking of a MSI Z690 gaming (WiFi), the DDR5 version. But any experiences and tips are welcome ... thanks for looking.

Depends on how much you are willing to spend really.

I have the Asus  Rog Maximus Z690 that would fill your requirements. And I have always been a vary satisfied user of the Asus Rog series.

eVGA’s z690 motherboards are on sale for deep discount right now. If you want a z790 board, I think asus boards may fit your bill.

BTW what are the benefits choosing a z790 over a z690 chip-set? DDR5 improvements?

Native 13th gen support and improved I/O are the notable ones IIRC. 13th gen support just takes a firmware update, and the extra pci lanes depends on your use case but z690 seems to be the bang for the buck right now.

Edit: And higher memory boost speeds on ddr5.

There doesn’t seem to be a great deal of difference between Z690 and Z790. If you are an extreme overclocker and want the latest equipment and specs than the Z790 it is. I just purchased an Evga Z690 Classified MB and am extremely happy with it. It is currently on sale in the US for $329. DDR5 ram has also come down in price.

I got the cheapest Asus Z790 motherboard (Prime Z790-P Wifi - $250) I could find for a second build, and put a 13700KF in it. I cant complain, its working perfectly at 5500mhz all core and can boost a couple cores up to 5900mhz, while keeping the temps low. I have an EVGA Z690 Dark and had an MSI Z690. I like the Asus bios the best as there is a lot of options that you can configure in the bios regarding TVB/OCTVB that I use. I believe the main difference between the Z790 and Z690 is the max DDR5 speed. This one is rated for 7200mhz and my older 4 dimm Z690 mobo was 6000mhz max.

That´s great, thank for this info. What RAM do you use?

I still don´t know whether it is better to go to a Z790 with DDR4 or with DDR5?  (Considering only IL-2 performance, not cost of Mobo+RAM)

I'm using a Hynix M-die 32GB Kingston Renegade 6400mhz kit currently at 6600mhz on this board. I can bring it up higher, but wanted to keep the voltages as low as possible.

That's a good question, I don't know what potential gains would be with DDR5 vs a good kit of DDR4 would be. I assume it it would negligible, but don't have a DDR4 kit and/or motherboard to do an actual test with IL2. That would be interesting if someone could..

If it was a new build without having DDR4. I would definitely recommend getting DDR5, preferably a Hynix M-die kit, or even the newer A-die kits once the prices come down for those.

Read a lot of forum posts everywhere on z690 or z790; it seems that a lot of brands have problems when using XMP memory boost with z690 chip set.

I had problems with a Gigabyte Aorus Ultra rev 1.0; by now 3 BIOS versions later and it still does not work ...  Runs stable without XMP at 4800 mHz though.

As stated before, I have the Asus Rog Maximus mb. Always updated to latest bios. Always run XMP, never had problems.

This is what HWMonitor shows:

Since the XMP profile is more than enough I wouldn't even bother tuning for more.

Also on water-cooling so no problems with temps.

Asus on the way.

Congrats on new mb.

I always look at the downloads page for the particular mb and start downloading things like manuals and software. Also to check supported cpu's & memory.

It takes a few minutes of your time but I also follow the subdir structure as shown in the download page. Mine looks like this:

Makes it easier (for me) to check for latest updates.

I don't use Armoury Crate (disabled in bios Tools) and install updates myself.

Well, i just sent it back; it would not boot, changed memory from corsair to kingston, still hanging with error code 55 (memory).

Only without my 3080ti active it booted to BIOS, but within a minute a flickering screen and frozen mouse and keyboard.

PS This motherboard was also quite warped, about 3mm at one edge even. Used washers under the standoffs mounting it not to bend it back.

I suspected a defective PCI x64 slot or CPU area fault.

Mailed local support, told me my local amazon buy was from Spain and not from my country. Bull.

So i bought an MSI z790 EDGE WiFi DDR5 instead. Flat as a mirror, runs fine !

Never No mo'' Asus for me, this is the second time i bought a faulty MB from them.

On the first buy (10 years ago) i had no warranty as they blamed me for bent pins under the CPU.

My retailer then took the blame and fixed it himself.

What about gigabyte z690 aorus Master? Do you think its a suitable for overclocking mobo? Anybody had any issues with it?

I have gigabyte z490 aorus elite ax and i am happy with  but i havent done any serious ovelclocking till now....

Personal and IMO: Gigabyte makes quality stuff, but i had a mail from their support that with my z690 chipset my QVL listed Corsair DDR5 memory does not clock correctly with an i9 12th gen processor. Had hassles with all new BIOS versions.

Bought other Kingston memory, also NADA.

Sent Gigabyte back after 3 months waiting for a proper BIOS, and courtesy of amazon.

Bought a MSI z790 DDR5 Edge now, seems to run fine until now from start with still the first BIOS.

Seems MSI (again) does better homework before releasing something.
