This poll is to get an idea about the configuration of the IL2 player's sound system.

There have been over the years a lot of complaints about sounds of all type hence this poll to see what how do we manage the sim generated sounds.

Can't answer the last question because how would this apply if I use MB sound outputs. Cannot complete your poll, sorry.

I probably am not clear here. I mean connection from your PC system to the external unit like loudspeakers, headphones etc.

I completed the possibilities to be more precise.

Hi, have just voted. I choosed "cabled Headphones" for my cabled VR-Headset

Not sure "hardware" addresses the root of the ask.   Yes, I saw the posts where folks said the game sounds better through better hardware.  But I'm doubting that addresses the request; if a guitarist lacks rhythm, you don't solve it with a better stereo.

I assume what folks were pointing out might be what I notice: some planes need tender loving care regarding their external audio.

I recall watching this super-awesome IL-2 video, and the biggest immersion breaker was the Yak external plane sounds...

Listening to a real plane on Youtube with the same onboard audio and cabled headphones, the real plane still sounds like a real plane.  Yes, I realize it's an Alison powerplant in that Yak... The overall sound "profile" is different; different frequency ranges and attack.   The game doesn't need to sound exactly like the original; I already have suspension of disbelief.  The game just needs to FOOL me better.

Following a certain train of thought (M-105 based on M-100 which was based on Hispano-Suiza 12Y): Did this plane have an original Hispano-Suiza engine?  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lMdMo2j3084

I usually run the game without sound, and even play some personal music instead of all this racket (oops) coming from the game. ?

BTW the sound of the plane in the video above is nicely edited and flowing with the camera external views in response to the plane moving in and out.

But here is obviously quite clear that the comment and radio voices are IMO far too loud, maybe not on the oft mediocre internal speakers of a laptop,

but on a hifi or quality VR set they might be.

That is another dimension I forgot to put in the poll. How many of you listen to some classical music, or to the ride of the valkyries or some other very exciting music.

The advantage is that you indeed fly and die and ride with the valkyries in the sky without noticing it.

When your engine is hit and slowly looses power you cannot hear it as you listen to Beethovens Letter to Elise, or a Small Night Music, and so you pleasantly plunge into the ground happy and relaxed.?

The only thing that will keep you alive and awake is the furious sound of your engine, the burned oil smell and fuel fumes (that last one can also kill you).

I compared the sound of your white Yak Youtube video and the sound of the Yak-7 in IL2 moving taxiing and taking off.

The sound card I have the SoundBlaster AE5 Plus, has many parameters to play with. And by adjusting them and create your own profile you can really improve the sound and make it much more credible. But it becomes a completely personal sound experience but worth trying.

Poll results

If I look at the poll the majority play with a headphone and cable connected to the motherboard.

But when one says motherboard I suspect that many use the headphone connector that is on the PC case front panel which is the worst way to go sound quality wise.

I made a small addition to the poll related to  that point

The best solution isn't even an option.

Edited for clarity:

motherboard has usb-c
Apple USB-C to 3.5mm adapter plugs into motherboard usb-c
extremely short run 3.5mm to RCA cable connects to stereo amp
stereo amp has headphone jack
headphones are plugged into jack via two lengths of headphone cable with a 3.5mm double female joiner

I’ve discovered while flying in VR to have my audio coming through my stereo speakers especially with my thumping bass subwoofer. It vibrates the entire floor and desk so really adds to immersion while engine is running while each pull of the trigger you can feel through your hand. Crank it up! Awesome.

i obviously loose this vibration feedback when using headphones so I only use them when absolutely necessary because of this.

I have sound coming through my monitor and through my vr headset.

I can control the volume of the vr by the buttons on the vr but can only control the volume of the monitor it the game. The keyboard volume control moves the volume level but the sound stays the same.

I did not have the option to select this configuration above.

S!

Razer headset with it´s own USB sound card. Very good sound for my use and could attach the DelanClip easily.

HyperX headphones. Super-comfortable and allow the attachment of a head-tracking clip just fine.

Not sure about question 3 but the last option "...cable connected to the motherboard..." is probably closest as the headphones are integrated into the vr headset and connected via hdmi

I use two different systems depending on situation: cabled stereo system or 7.1 bluetooth headphones.
