Any one else think the "Whirring" sound associated with the p39 is WAY to loud?

its mostly audible when in external view

Supercharger noises are always good

It's not the supercharger, is it? I always thought it was somehow related to the long driveshaft, especially considering that it's mostly audible from the front in external views.

For comparison, here's a real P-39 in flight:

Does anyone know if engine sounds be modified without counting as a "mod", like radio chatter can be? If so, this might be very easy to fix.

This is a P-63, but it has the same prominent driveline gear whine in the cockpit, which is something you might not wish for.

Thanks, I should have thought to look for P-63 videos as well.

It seems like this makes sense as the internal sound, but probably not external.

Yes, it's the propeller drivetrain, the reduction gear on the front to be more specific.

Judging from airshow vids one could argue that maybe it should be a bit less audible in F3 flyby camera view with high power settings where prop and exhaust noise would prevail, but let's be realistic what can and cannot be achieved with FMod engine this sim uses. For F1, F2 and F3 low power views it's close enough in my opinion.

I would never consider these inflight recording with go-pro or whatever other type of camera as what you will hear in your ears if you are in the cockpit.

Sound levels noise filtering from those embedded microphones, and how your sound system (screen loudspeakers, headphones, tabletop loudspeakers with or without a woofer, optical sound connection etc. etc.) finally delivers it when you watch the youtube video makes that the only person that can be judge would be a pilot flying that same real plane and then fly the IL2 model and compare.

He only would be the best judge and if some of you did fly that plane then please put here your very precious comments.

If the pilot has a headphone with noise cancellation as it is very standard today, he will have a distorted noise feeling anyway. The sound level is so high in single engine fighters (engine very near just in front of you) at full power that noise cancelling (in my experience at least those from David Clark that were available 10-12 years ago) did not do much as the sound goes through your skull and body anyway.

I never flew the P39 or P63 (special engine mounting system with long crankshaft and gear under the cockpit)  so I cannot compare at all.

This is to say that as a pilot when the sound levels are very high (air pressure waves) your body does contribute to the overall sound feeling mainly for the low frequency ones. This is impossible to replicate, except maybe if you used a professional high quality multichannel microphone system in the cockpit and then play it on a high fidelity sound system with very large and powerful loudspeakers and a large woofer and or subwoofer  in front of you playing at very high sound level. Better be someone living alone in a house with no neighbors. Otherwise you will be probably immediately kicked out of your house and your loudspeakers will follow out of the window?.
