Hi! I'm looking for technical information on the German KG-style stick grips used by the Russians in WWII. It seems this type of grip, which in many ways appears to reflect the design of the German KG12 and KG13A/B, was mainly/only fitted to Yak fighters; the other fighters (Lagg, MiG) used "spade-style" grips.

What were the designations of Soviet grips? Do any handbooks or manuals exist that describe the design, features and functions of those grips?

I believe variations of the German-style grip also carried over to early MiG jets after the war.

All info appreciated. Thank you.

Steve

Sorry if I'm late, but this grip was indeed a copy of the German KG-12.
As far as I know this grip was called R-1 (Р-1 in Russian) and appeared around 1943 on most Soviet fighters like Yak-9, Yak-3 and La-7. La-5FN didn't get this grip, perhaps because it was considered an unnecessary change for a cockpit already in production.
Post-war this grip could also be seen in practically every Soviet design from La-9 and La-11 to MiG-15. The controls were identical to KG-12 except for the addition of the wheel brake lever.

You can actually read a bit more on it from the recent Dev Blog on IL-2 Korea: https://il2-korea.com/news/dd_23
