Knarley-Bob Posted December 1, 2022 Posted December 1, 2022 Did the Luftwaffe ship all its bombers to the eastern front? I've never seen any in either Normandy or Bodenplatte. Just curious.......... KB

There were a couple of Ju88 units in the west but not much. I think even the Ju88 units were mostly night fighters and nuisance raiders. I know that there are cases of ground kills of He111s in the west but I strongly suspect that those planes were transports and not organized bomber units. 1

senseispcc Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 The Germans did in 1943 change from a attack posture to a pure defencive one, and bomber to defend air space are no good, they tried! It is difficult to have a real bomber force for long when facing a overwhelming force of two (2) airforces, one of the UK with all her allies pilots from even occupied countries and a second air force that are concentrating their efforts first to destroy your industries and home land infrastructures reducing your air force to nothing not only in the air but also on the ground. Never forget that the USA had in Europe 2 (two) fighter forces, one for the escort of strategic bomber forces and one with a double mission, escort of tactical bombers and the other interdiction of any flight of the enemy air force, It was nearly the same with the RAF, a tactical force and a strategical one. And the last remarq is that German bombers at the end of the war, East or West front where used with heavy losses D-Day, Remagen bridge, bridges on Oder, see also mistel attacks! 1
Talon_ Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Single engine planes were half the cost of twins and could still carry bombs where they needed to go. That's a big deal when your economy is in the toilet and your production facilities burning through the night. 1 1
[CPT]Crunch Posted December 2, 2022 Posted December 2, 2022 Judging by a lot of the old gunnery film clips they set them out on airfields for allied pilots to practice on. 3

I think you intended to say two fighter forces in England unless you don't count Italy as part of Europe...
