Enceladus828 Posted November 19, 2022 Posted November 19, 2022 On this day in 1996, at the Quincy airport, Illinois (an uncontrolled airport), a United Express Beechcraft 1900C with 12 people onboard was landing when a King air A90, piloted by a former Trans World Airlines Captain (later demoted to Flight Engineer after failing two check rides, then resigned from TWA and became a flying instructor, but was assigned remedial training after forgetting to lower the landing gear, damaging the prop) and a student, began their takeoff roll from an interesting runway after the pilots failed to announce their takeoff roll and scan for approaching planes and collided with the Beech 1900. All 14 people survived the initial crash but were unable to escape and died in the smoke and fire. Several pilots attempted to open the airstair door on the Beech 1900 but it jammed and wouldn’t open. The co-pilot attempted to open the left overwing emergency exit but was overcome by smoke, and though there were safety cards and an automated briefing, the passengers were unaware that there were overwing exits. The investigators determined the probable cause to be the King air pilots failure to effectively monitor both the common frequency and to visually scan for traffic. Lack of adequate fire and rescue equipment at the Quincy airport was cited as a factor in the high fatality rate. Very sad ?
