HappyHaddock Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 Apologies if this should be in a technical issues sub-section but I know it will get more views here. For various reasons I've had no real time for flight sims and been away from this forum for many months meaning I am somewhat behind in updating IL-2. Something which I am now trying to do. Firing up the game launcher naturally tells me that it needs to update before it will run the game, it then connects to establish how much data it needs to download but sits there doing nothing telling me I have a download speed of 0/sec. The usual red progression bar just doesn't move as it would if actually downloading the update(s) to install. I've tried several times over the last couple of weeks always with the same result, though oddly each time I try it comes back with a totally different amount of data it needs to download ranging from just a couple of Gb to over 40Gb. This suggests something inconsistent with how it is connecting/communicating with IL-2 in terms of establishing what is already on my HD and what it needs to add/change. In frustration I've tried a fresh install by re-installing the game launcher direct from this web site. This installer downloads and sets up just fine effectively giving me a duplicate version of the updater/launcher screen I already have, but this then gives the same implication it has established a connection to freshly download and install the game but just sits there telling me I have a download speed of 0/sec and doesn't actually install a fresh copy of IL-2. As such I am affectively locked out of IL-2. I know this isn't a wider problem directly with my own broadband being restricted as I can easily access the internet and download you-tube videos and other streamed content... plus if I couldn't connect to IL-2 servers I wouldn't be able to post this here, it simply won't connect to the part that updates or installs the game. Has anybody else encountered this? Has there been some change recently that may clash with other software preventing a download? Any useful hints at things to try or will I need to contact IL-2 support for suggestions?
CountZero Posted November 5, 2022 Posted November 5, 2022 (edited) Have you try remove contents of updates folder in your main game folder ? Looking at your forum badges i dont se BoS badge, do you by any chance have that on steam, if yes did you merge acount from steam to forum one, maybe that could be problem also. Also the useal stuff like run as administrator, or maybe some antivirus or defender program is blocking it (try to turn them off for that time only) , restart PC, and so on... HappyHaddock Posted November 6, 2022 Author Posted November 6, 2022 Thanks for the suggestions, BOS I bought on physical DVD years ago when it first came out and has never caused an issue in the past as my game account always shows I own it. Although I'm making no progress identifying what the cause of my non-download problem is, my own thinking is that it is most likely some sort of security software blocking things, so I'm going to try disabling various stuff today and see if I get anywhere. Thanks HH
HappyHaddock Posted November 6, 2022 Author Posted November 6, 2022 Well I've tried disabling all my security software and no change. The updater/launcher fires up, initially it starts by suggesting there may be as much as 40Gb to download, over about 15mins this counts down to about 14Gb (circled in red in the image below) then just sits there without actually going any further. If memory serves me correctly what I've circled in red isn't how much has been downloaded but the total it expects to need to download and is something that used to be established very quickly without needing quarter of an hour. Once downloading began a red progression bar would work left to right across the bottom of the window, whilst the figure circled in green would count up until it matched the figure in red showing download was complete and ready for installation. Can anyone confirm this is how the update/launcher still works, or are my problems stemming from misunderstanding changes made to how the launcher should function? many thanks HH
Missionbug Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) I always have issues updating this particular sim, it takes forever sometimes and recently I went the way of a new instal, took me most of the week so I feel for you. There have been many occasions where the launcher download just stopped, run it again, usually I find what is already in the folder from the update is then added to from where it stopped. Check what the overall size was before you start and you can see that but you might have to keep doing it, very tiresome I know welcome to my Broadband world! Before going for a completely new download have you service provider run a test on your line, once I thought all was well but it seems there was a issue at the exchange, their words so I let the techie types out there do what they do. They fixed it and my download eventually came home, it did not make it any faster though. Sorry, cannot help more just a few thoughts from a frustrated downloader. Take care and be safe. Wishing you all the very best, Pete. Edited November 6, 2022 by Missionbug 1
HappyHaddock Posted November 6, 2022 Author Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) Well I've tried a few broadband speed tests and I'm getting an average of 34.7Mbps download and 8.6Mpbs upload which is pretty much what I am paying my internet service provider for, plus I am having no issues with downloading other stuff from the internet, so this download problem looks to be specific to IL2, but that doesn't get me any closer to working out why it won't download and update IL2? EDIT Well fingers crossed it might finally be doing something. I've removed every trace of IL2 from my PC and yet again I'm trying a clean install and this time things are progressing... admittedly very slowly but it is doing what I'd expect so just another 44Gb to go at a stated rate of 2.3Mb/sec ... who knows in a few hours it might be ready! Missionbug Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 I hope you get everything this time, for me at the very least a download can be something like six to eight hours for a normal update ranging to overnight depending on the size of the update. By the time I download and then save all the mission/campaign files again I have lost interest and just wait for the next update. Take care and be safe. Wishing you all the very best, Pete.
AEthelraedUnraed Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 Did you already delete the contents of the Updates folder as CountZero suggested? It isn't clear from your posts whether you already tried that.

But I get a max download speed from the Il2 server of around 5 mb/s, minimum in the kb/s. Hope it works for you this time. Fingers crossed. 20 minutes ago, Missionbug said: for me at the very least a download can be something like six to eight hours for a normal update ranging to overnight depending on the size of the update. Wow. The Normandy update of around 11 gigs took me 66 minutes in total to download and install. And I thought that was bad.
szelljr Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 (edited) This is why i am happy with the Steam version. 10 -11 mb/s download speed for the updates. Edited November 6, 2022 by szelljr

Anyway I'm so far about 13Gb out of 44Gb in to a full download for a fresh install. Cheers HH
R33GZ Posted November 6, 2022 Posted November 6, 2022 I take my whole box into a gaming lounge to run updates on their super uber fibre connection and it will still take me about an 1-2 hours. I find the total sum to download does fluctuate for unknown reasons and can sometimes take most of the download time before it has an accurate total number. I also notice the download speed can fluctuate wildly... I've always put this down too the servers and me being separated by large chunks of earth and sea. I'm in NZ and the servers are in... Russia? Cyprus? Western Europe? America? Who knows, everything is bloody miles away from here ?

HappyHaddock Posted November 6, 2022 Author Posted November 6, 2022 Well I am finally up and running again after nearly a seven hour download to install from scratch, just got to get my various mods, game settings and key mappings all put back in again to personalise this to the way I used to like it ... in running a quick test it's surprising how many things I've just done or looked for on instinct only to find they aren't like that in the stock game. Cheers HH
