TG-55Panthercules Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Search function isn't working for me tonight, so I thought I'd just ask - as far as playing IL-2GB in VR (on a Reverb G2) is concerned, is it OK to upgrade to Windows 11 or should I stay on Windows 10?
Guest deleted@83466 Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 A guy like you should probably just stay on 10. ?

TG-55Panthercules Posted November 2, 2022 Author Posted November 2, 2022 But why - are there problems with running IL-2GB in VR on windows 11?
Comrade_Weng Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 I run a G2 on windows 11 and have done for the past 6 months or more. No issues to report. When I first moved to 11 from 10 I believe I saw an increase in performance on my vive. Make sure hardware accelerated GPU scheduling is turned off.
TG-55Panthercules Posted November 2, 2022 Author Posted November 2, 2022 (edited) Thanks for the constructive reply. I noted in the VR benchmark thread and spreadsheet that several folks were posting results using Windows 11 and I couldn't find any posts (for the last few pages anyway) where people were complaining about problems with Win 11, so I was hoping it was a non-issue. spreckair Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 I am flying on W11 with a G2 and have had no problems.
senseispcc Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 (edited) Windows 11 is not really finished, ok! But it is on a powerful "modern" machine like mine it is a little faster! So it depend of your pc and it is you how decide! But Windows 11 is not a finished product and it gets upgraded regularly, so if you like something very stable and one fps slower go for 10! The final choice is yours. Edited November 2, 2022 by senseispcc corrections
AEthelraedUnraed Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 I have seen some problems reported with using VR on Win11. Also, I'd rather wait until Win11 is a bit more fleshed out. Those are my main reasons for remaining on Win10 for now. Win10 is still supported for at least 3 more years, so no hurry. Although I do plan to build a new PC in a few months, and that'll most likely run Win11. 1
TG-55Panthercules Posted November 2, 2022 Author Posted November 2, 2022 Thanks for the replies. I found the thread about problems in VR with a recent/latest Win 11 update - looks like they're still working out some of the bugs. The new PC I'm setting up came with Win 10 and a free upgrade to Win 11 - guess I'll wait a while longer to pull the trigger on the free upgrade.
Gambit21 Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 “Upgrading” to a new Windows version is almost never a good idea until it’s had time to mature. “Upgrading to Windows 7” was a joke forever after Widows 8 was released. (I skipped it) and the same happened to some degree since then with Windows 10 etc. No I wouldn’t touch 11 right now. 1 2
Voyager Posted November 2, 2022 Posted November 2, 2022 Of you're using Alder Lake or Raptor Lake, you need Windows 11, otherwise, I just don't see much that it has to offer over 10 right now.

I'm running with a 12th Gen Intel(R) Core(TM) i9-12900K, which as I understand it is one of the Alder Lake CPUs, but it seems to be running Win 10 just fine so far (haven't had time to try it with IL-2 GB yet though) - so why would I need Win 11?

Windows 10 does not have awareness of the big.LITTLE cores so will assign tasks to whatever threads are available regardless of whether they are a fast or slow core. I'd expect il-2 performance to be really irregular on Windows 10 with the e-cores enabled. Try it and let us know.
TG-55Panthercules Posted November 3, 2022 Author Posted November 3, 2022 Unfortunately, I won't be able to try it for a few days, but it will be interesting to see what happens. Seems like things used to be so much simpler ...
TG-55Panthercules Posted November 17, 2022 Author Posted November 17, 2022 (edited) Just got my new PC up and running (PSU was DOA and I had to deal with that and some travel IRL). Haven't had a chance to unbox and setup my new Reverb G2 so haven't been able to run any VR tests, but I did run the SYN_Vander v6 benchmark for 1080 monitor just to see how my rig was performing out of the box (haven't done any OC tweaking either just yet), and got the following: Frames: 7976 - Time: 60000ms - Avg: 132.933 - Min: 107 - Max: 187 Haven't figured out how to address the hyperthreading or fast/slow core concepts for this CPU yet, but if I am interpreting the spreadsheet correctly it seems like the rig is running pretty much as would be expected out of the box. Guess I'll try to get my VR working and run those benchmarks for baselines before starting to tweak/overclock anything and before upgrading to Windows 11. Not sure how I'll tell whether "il-2 performance [is] really irregular on Windows 10 with the e-cores enabled" from these benchmarks, or just by seeing how things look while actually playing the game (which I haven't done yet), but I'll try to remember to do that a bit before I make the switch to Win 11 to see if I can tell the difference. Sgt_Joch Posted November 17, 2022 Posted November 17, 2022 (edited) yes, no advantage upgrading to Win 11 if your main focus is gaming. I upgraded about a month ago, benchmarked all my games before and after and FPS, visual and sound quality was the same in Win 10 and 11. Not surprising since for example NVIDIA uses the same driver for Win 10/11. The advantage to upgrading have more to do with the user experience. Win 11 is more secure out of the box, although a Win 10 user can also implement a lot of this security features. Win 11 also makes it easier to customize the desktop, start menu, taskbar as you like. It is also a bit easier to access "hidden" windows programs like device manager, task manager, etc, some of which have also been redesigned to be more readable. Under the hood though, 90-95% is the same as Win 10. Edited November 17, 2022 by Sgt_Joch
