EDIT*
Finally mystery solved. After doing a full windows reinstall and trying everything, I by chance plugged my Varjo Aeroninto a different HDMI slot and voila, problem solved. That was a month long mystery.*

Hi all, I need some help. After the last update, I can no longer remap any keys or joystick settings. As soon as I click on the command to edit it, it immediately shows "Null". Any suggestions? thanks

Did you make a backup of your luascripts and inputs folders? not at my computer right now, I think those 2 folders are where the snap views and key mapping presets are saved... that won't help with the null problem, but you'll definitely want a backup before you go mucking around with them.

I'm not taking the piss.... but you checked your keyboard is functional and recognized?

Thanks but yes I’ve backed up and the keyboard is fine. I’m really confused on this one although I’m sure it’s a simple fix but I’m too dumb to figure it out haha.

Could be that just your USB hardware ID# has changed.

Use JoyID to change them back?

Delete the contents of, or rename your data/inputs folder, make a new inputs folder and it will auto build next time you fire up the game, see if it solves your issue.  The current.ACTIONS file is where your keys you have bound are kept, try re-introducing it back into the new folder, if it's not the problem you should have all your keys back.

I did this once, and it worked. Unfortunately, the problem has returned and this solution no longer fixes it. I no longer am able to edit keystrokes or joystick buttons. Each time I try to edit the action, it shows a “null” and I can’t put a new input in.

interestingly though, I was able to edit the “default VR view” and “VR zoom” keystrokes.
I’ve tried everything, including a complete reinstall, but nothing is working at this point. It would be great if someone could lend some help. Thanks.

Quick bump, hoping someone sees this and can help.

Are you using an unpowered USB hub? That can cause problems. Other than that, I'd suggest checking the game integrity and/or uninstalling the program and reinstalling it.

I have this issue too… Only in VR though. If I launch in 2D mode, it works.

I will try deleting the input folder.

I submitted a ticket.

Thanks for the response. I’m not using an unpowered hub and I’ve tried reinstalling the game.
I’m really confused on this since I don’t have any issues with the other two flight sims I fly regularly.

Do you have any virtual joystick installed perhaps, or any fancy gaming keyboard that acts as a DirectInput device (I think Corsair makes some of those that can cause problems in some games as long as their software for it is active)?

Is it possible that the input file is marked read only, or in a folder that requires administrative privileges to access?

I have the same issue. I have removed the input file and let it repopulate. My problem started with the last update. Its only random buttons that don't respond on different controllers. I have some Arduino based controllers I made for my cockpit, these are the most problematic. MFS and DCS are working fine.

*edit* I am no longer able to get the input folder marked unread. I still can’t remap any keys.

Ding Ding Ding, we have a winner! Thank you so much, looks like that was the issue and it solved it. If you’re within 100kms of Vancouver Island- I owe you a beer. Cheers mate, many thanks.

No worries! Good flying!

Thanks for the tip!

My input folder was read only too.

I unchecked it, hit apply and ok.
Keymapping worked again.

But the next time I tried, I only got "null" again. Turned out that read only was checked again…

I turned it off again and set the IL-2 icon to run as admin.

Now it seems to work…fingers crossed!

@T_oll and @1_Robert_, are your games under the "program files(x86)" folder? If so move it to anoter lokation on your disc(s). Win protection of that folder is usually the ground for such problems.

Well that worked once but now it always reverts back to Read Only and I can no longer edit my key strokes. Frustrating.

Like FlyingH said, install your sims on another drive. Windows won't interfere anymore.

Example, "E:\1C Game Studios\IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles". I've always installed my sims on a non-C drive.

I appreciate the help, but I did another reinstall, this time right to my C drive. Didn’t help.

Quick bump, hoping someone can help. I’ve submitted a ticket but no response as they believe it’s solved from an earlier solution posted that only worked once.

Well mystery solved FINALLY. In case you experience the same issue, please see my resolution in the first post.

My Aero is in a DisplayPort, switching ports did not change anything. For now all that works consistently (for me) is to make keybinding edits in 2D or (assume) unchecking the "Read-Only" flay on the Data/Inputs folder before each use..

EDIT 10-28-23  - The strange thing is, forgot to reset the "Read-Only" flag and was able to map keys normally, and has been fine ever since..

Can confirm that the Varjo Aero plugged into another port in my graphics card also solved the issue. In my case it was from one Digital port to another.

Key mapping is still damn' annoying and quirky in Il-2. Having lots of trouble and it is somewhat ruining my enjoyment of the sim. For instance, I mapped guns to my Virpil stick trigger and they just kept firing. Changed and changed and changed the binding and suddenly, out of nowhere, it started working so they only fired when the trigger was pressed. Very finicky, IMHO.

If someone has advice on mapping to Virpil devices then any help is appreciated, even though the Aero port switch seems to have done the trick.

By why can't I have radiators and flaps on axes? It works perfectly fine in MSFS. I would like the developers to fix the key binding area, or at least simplify it...
