Barn-Owl Posted October 27, 2022 Posted October 27, 2022 Greetings, For those who use the Reverb G2, I have a simple question: can I play IL-2 without having to go through the miserable Windows Mixed Reality Portal? My games are on Steam and I would like to know if the game is still playable without having to go through Windows Mixed Reality and Steam. I think that I can maximize my hardware by somehow bypassing these two services that chew up lots of frame rates.... If anyone has good suggestions, please respond with clear directions on how to do this, thank you!
[CPT]Crunch Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 Use the skyspace app to regain all that wasted card memory, works slick. Basically your loading a small floor and blank wall as your WMR home. If you set up openXR it allows booting directly into the game with the non-steam version. 1

I believe that using WMR Portal's built-in Infinite Expanse location has the same effect - this video was made before the latter was introduced as an option so all you had was the bloated portal homes.

Is Infinite Expanse already available for Windows 10? Could you explain in details how to obtain and use it? I use OpenXR. Thanks

In the portal, with input sent to WMR (Win+Y), bring up the quick access panel by pressing Win and then click on Places: It'll spawn an object you can click on to launch to the new place, click on it and off you go. Next time you start WMR portal you don't need to do any of the above. * Quote Starting on November 22 2021, Windows 10 version 2004 and newer will enable Infinite Expanse, SteamVR boot with Mixed Reality Portal launch, and new startup experience settings currently available for Windows 11. Youtch Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 Does WMR consume any ressources when you put pause to ensure it does not mirror IL2 whie plauying? Does Home run in the background even though you are not executing the game from Home?
Barn-Owl Posted October 28, 2022 Author Posted October 28, 2022 I do not understand why I have to use WMR in the very first place! Other games like Aces High 3 launch directly without having to go through WMR or steam....
Drano Posted October 28, 2022 Posted October 28, 2022 (edited) I play AH with a G2 and had a RiftS before that. On launching it is aware if you have a VR device connected and asks specifically if you want to use your Oculus or SteamVR headset, yes or no. AH isn't dependent on WMR or Steam or Oculus to run----but the headsets are. With the G2, AH needs to have WMR for SteamVR to run. What would be really cool would be if it could run on Opencomposite. THEN it'd probably just launch like IL-2 does. Edit : That's not entirely accurate. Il-2 has a box to check in the launcher to run in 2d or VR mode and it'll just launch from there whet you click play unless you change it. Or set up different shortcuts. I quick tested Skyspace and Infinite Expanse yesterday, in the same mission. In the 1st case the game gained about 10% FPS (5-7 FPS), in the 2nd about half of this. Not so bad for me, continually demanding more performance from my NVidia Quadro P4000. @[CPT]Crunch: Thanks for sharing the video!

Interesting, this prompted me to test the memory usage of both as I used to use the skyspace empty room and stopped after infinite expanse was released. What I found is that there is a 200Mb difference in VRAM usage between the two - so I guess if your card has 8Gb or less you might perhaps notice a difference if it's hovering around the 100% VRAM usage mark (I guess the Normandy map might reach that amount? I've not seen more than 6Gb usage on the Rheinland map for example).
