Zeev Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 I am considering installing Windows 11 just for this feature. According to youtube the auto hdr is great, makes the picture even better than official hdr in some games. But I could not find any youtube videos for IL2 Great Battles and auto HDR. Any one got the game on Windows 11 and can share any info, how the game looks?
No_85_Gramps Posted October 21, 2022 Posted October 21, 2022 (edited) I've been using HDR on Win 11 for a couple of weeks now. Definitely enhances the colors but initially they appear too dark. Of course, you can adjust the HDR brightness levels in Win11, or you can adjust the in-game gamma settings. It's hard to show any pictures as they will always display the same based on if HDR is on, or not. The in-game HDR option works, but for me i get lots of "Glowing Halo" effects around objects. I just keep HDR on in the windows settings, so everything displays in HDR. Just remember that HDR requires a monitor that has 10 bit color capability. Lots of info out there on HDR and Win11, browse around and read some articles about how it works. I don't know that I would upgrade to Win 11 just for the HDR, I just like keeping my OS on the latest windows release. Edited October 21, 2022 by No_85_Gramps

Just curious, doesn't disabling "bloom" in startup.cfg solve that problem for you? It helps me with getting rid of bloom-halo on my own airplane, but I never investigated other objects outside that closely.

I will here shortly and let you know. Thank you! Update: Bloom was already turned off, and when I saw the "halos" Windows was in 8 bit SDR mode. Now with Windows in 10 bit HDR mode, game in HDR mode, and bloom turned off, the issue pretty much went away. I should clarify that the halos I saw were mostly around the scratches in the canopy, depending on the direction of the sunlight. Also, they were visible around aircraft off in the distance. Things look much better now. Edited October 22, 2022 by No_85_Gramps
GlobFly Posted December 7, 2022 Posted December 7, 2022 (edited) The HDR setting in the IL-2 graphics options has nothing to do with the Windows HDR setting or Auto HDR. It's a misnomer and only refers to the "eye adaption" style effect, not actual HDR display output. IL-2 *should* be elevated to HDR output with Auto HDR since it's a DirectX 11 game, but for some reason Auto HDR doesn't activate. Edited December 7, 2022 by GlobFly
