The gauge shows empty then a few seconds later changes to full then back to empty . I ran a test and put 10 % fuel . It showed the correct content  , then went to empty , a few seconds later back to the original setting of 10%.

The fuel gauge is manually operated. A button must be pressed to show the fuel quantity. This is the game simulating the button push. It was confusing to me as a newcomer as well. Focke Wulf's operate the same way.

...also, in the Spit, you have to be flying level for 10 seconds or so to enable the button press and fuel reading (assuming this has not changed recently).

Also, I belive the gauge only shows the amount in the lower reserve tank.  So, you won't see any change until the main tank is empty and you are draining from the reserve.
