I'll just say that the performance hit was noticeable when looking at the FPS counter. Dropped to 100 FPS and slightly lower from around 140 to 185. Still completely smooth and playable and without an FPS counter not even noticeable, but that's still a pretty huge drop. S.
Patricks Posted October 26, 2022 Author Posted October 26, 2022 (edited) What is the general consensus on a free Benchmark app "everyone" uses? I want to run my current system w/3090, then with it downgraded to 32MB RAM (from 64, as I will sell this box with the original 4x8gb sticks), then i'll run the new 13900KF based system with the 3090, and finally the new system with the 4090. If I still have the i9-9900K system i'll toss the 4090 in to see the difference also.. For overall system I like UserBenchMark, but will get what makes sense. Edited October 26, 2022 by Patricks

I guess everyone still uses 3DMark? Timespy is the only one that's actually free these days, but I do like to use it. Plus I use Passmark Performance test which not only does a pretty thorough check on everything (multiple CPU-tests, including single thread, multiple GPU-, RAM-, disk-tests) but they also offer a nice overview of components on their website and how they rank according to the test-results. Its UI and the 3D-tests look a bit outdated, but the results are pretty comprehensive IMO. Not only do you get an overall system-score but scores for every category tested plus scores for sub-categories like 2D-/3D-performance or CPU single thread performance, etc. At least one of the HW-YTers I follow (Paul from Paul's HW) uses it, so that's good enough for me. Oh.. and despite there being a trial period, the complete test will still work after the trial is over. www.passmark.com S.
Patricks Posted November 1, 2022 Author Posted November 1, 2022 Thanks... off-topic but a word of warning to anyone looking to build a 13th gen Intel system with a Z690 Gigabyte Gaming X DDR4. While it is listed as being compatible with the i9-13900 it comes with a BIOS version that is not, and it will not POST. After trying many times to update the BIOS to the latest (F20b IIRC) version using a Flash drive and the "BIOS Flash" button, clearing CMOS in a couple different ways, I called it and back to Amazon it went... All they had for Z790 DDR4 boards were ASUS, so ordered an ASUS TUG GAMING Z790-Plus D4, will see what happens but 13th gen compatibility should be built in..
firdimigdi Posted November 1, 2022 Posted November 1, 2022 Yeah, it's safe to assume that any m/b on stock with an already released chipset model will likely have an outdated BIOS.

Yep, and if their Flash procedure worked it would have been a non-issue (I assume). I like GB stuff but was going with a Z790 mobo either way this time, they just are not available (here in Spain) yet.. Edited November 3, 2022 by Patricks
Thorne Posted November 3, 2022 Posted November 3, 2022 I'm running a 4090 with a G2 (5800x CPU) - it works very well, I'm at 100% SS on balanced settings with pretty much everything turned up with the exception of MSAA and distant objects. As I mentioned on another thread, the GPU can handle Ultra just fine, unfortunately the CPU bogs down a bit when loading distant objects on 'High' and 'Ultra' presets so I'm sticking to balanced for now. My goal with the 4090 was to have the system ready for the Crystal or Aero at some point next year - I'd like to get away from Fresnels and into something with a higher PPD at some point. Bottom line it's a great experience currently, and will only get better with time. 1
Patricks Posted November 3, 2022 Author Posted November 3, 2022 If I ever get my i9-13900KF system up and running it should have the headroom missing on earlier CPU iterations, we shall see!

What is your resolution? 4090 with a 10900K and Aero, looks amazing, no AA or sharpen required, runs very smooth most of the time at high settings, Ultra slows it down. Will that be the processor?

During my testing I noticed a correlation between CPU spikes on 'High' and 'Ultra' settings, and frames with distant objects (cities mostly) coming into view. The GPU was able to hold 90fps on almost all frames after initial loading regardless of the scenery, the the performance graph showed the GPU frametime would spike only after the CPU frametime did the vast majority of the time. I suspect it's a CPU issue, or just an optimization issue regarding how distant objects are loaded on the higher presets.
