Guster Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 (edited) Based on the ones I've spent the most time flying relative to how long they've been available, I guess it's: 1. P-51 D. Sleek, fast, deadly and very modern by 1940s standards, and I never worry about fuel. 2. Spitfire Mk Vb. It doesn't do anything particular that some other plane couldn't do better, but it's a Spitfire. 3. Bf 109 G-2. Very good all-rounder for its time period, and you feel very safe in an Eastern Front environment. 4. Yak-1. In my opinion one of the best-looking WWII fighters. Handling is somewhere between a Spit and a Hurri, but a lot less forgiving when you cross the line. 5. La-5. It just looks bad-a**, but definitely one of the more challenging rides. However, once you 'get it' and finally manage to point those cannons the right place, it's quite rewarding. Honorable mentions: Hurricane Mk II because the Hurri is a legend, is fun to dogfight against the 109 E-7, and the cockpit is very nicely modelled. FW 190 D-9 because it's a wicked looking plane. Not something you'd want to encounter in a dark alley. Mosquito Mk VI because I've been in love with that plane since I was a nipper. Edited October 19, 2022 by Guster

Have you tried the Wing Walkers server? Though it's listed in the "Dogfight" servers, the missions are co-op exclusively. It has variable AI strength that scales with the number of players. It has a huge number of missions (some 20 I'd guess) which are incredibly diverse, sometimes very unconventional even (e.g. Night Witches mission) and they are adding missions regularly. I especially enjoy the action being more structured than the PvP servers, we're always working towards specific objectives that the mission offer. I find it a very enjoyable server: less high octane than PvP servers while offering a nice challenge. Great fun to play with some friends. 1

Beyond that, the 109's instrument panel is one of the best layouts of the era. When I first started flying semi-realistic sims (the original Sturmovik game, as opposed to even earlier, more arcade-y sims), I felt very unsure of myself and constantly looked at my instruments. As much as I like the Yak, I won't deny that Russian instrumentation is somewhat awful. British is generally fine (not perfect, but plenty good enough), while American can be okay but also kind of haphazard (P-47, P-38). The one plane that really stood out from all the others, in terms of allowing me to briefly look down with one keystroke and check my instruments even in the middle of combat--that was the 109. Hide contents It's not that other planes don't tell you the same information (and sometimes more). It's that the 109's dials and placement, and your proximity to them (because the cockpit's tiny) make the information instantly readable with the briefest glance. That's why I ultimately settled on using the 109 as my trainer all throughout my first Sturmovik years. I complete agree, the 109 is HMI-tastic. The Russian aircraft, errrr. The one benefit of the British kites is that all the dials are in exactly the same place, including (obvs. we don't have them) trainers. I flew Bulldogs when I was 19 and Chipmunks on experience flights when I was 15 and I am pretty sure that the main dials are also in exactly the same place. A nice touch. However the engine instruments are a horrific mess and someone should have delivered some polite slaps about those. Top 5? Have to go home and launch some check flights but the 109 simply 'fits' well and the Hurris is lovely. Oddly, I enjoyed the Typhoon more than I was expecting. 1
cardboard_killer Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Yak-7 (seemingly everyone's last pick for Yak-tacity, but it's my favorite) Spitfire IX Tempest (it's nearly idiot proof and I'm one big idiot) La-5 P-38 (just for flying and bombing; I cannot dogfight it it worth a darn)
TheWarsimmer Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 I held off on the tempest for a while, and man, if you're being honest, nothing comes close. Sometimes it feels like cheating on mp. Now that the 50s are fixed I finally like some u.s. planes too. The D model is great with the 6 guns and g-suit, but the b flies better. 1) tempest 2) p51 d/b 3) 109 g6 late 4) 190 a5 for up to mid war (those 151 20mm wreck and it's still maneuverable enough early war. The roll rate is huge and it controls in a dive like a dream) 5) il-2 41 or 42 (best tank buster in the game. Use the large HE rockets, not the AP, and killing tanks is ez mode) 1

JG_deserteagle540 Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 1)Bf109G6-Late, right mix of power, weight, handling, climbing. The Mg151/20 can handle the job. 2)Fw190D9, fast, good roll rate and good weapons 3)Fw190A3, very dominant during beginning of war 4)Me410, what a weaponry loadout & fun to fly 5)Spitfire IX, incredible maneuverability & 2 cannons 20mm

Not of myself but I spent many hours studying Krupinski's youtube vids and here and there I can pull off some of the maneuvers. It's all about bating them in a bit with some speed and angle changes, ducking shots when you come across their nose, but not losing too much speed in the process so you can still pull up and take a shot. 3

RyanR Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 It's hard to pick just five. What I love about GB is that the flight models aren't just caricatures of the real life ones. Lots of nuances, and planes that felt heavy handed in other sims can really sing here. In no particular order: 190D-9 190A-3 P-51 P-38 P-47 39 minutes ago, Youtch said: Nobody mentioning FW190A6? Is there anything wrong with that bird? 190A's seem to have their sweet spot in the sim with BoS and BoK. Once the A6 and A8 are in the game, they struggle with the allied Western Front offerings, if only because the AI doesn't fly them as well as it flies Spitfires and Tempests. In career mode, I'd be the only guy left alive at the end of every mission. -Ryan

It's a little more versatile than the A5 but very similar. The Antons are outclassed by the late Allied fighters, but we do still fly them for that purpose.
jojy47jojyrocks Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 Top 5 Planes I like in the Sim: 1. BF-109K4 2. Fw190 D9 3. P-51D 4. Spitfire IX 5. Yak-9T
DBFlyguy Posted October 19, 2022 Posted October 19, 2022 P-51D - cause Murica! and it does everything well Spitfire IX - Honestly spend most of my time flying this one, still wish we had a proper early model IX with round tail P-51B - classic Mustang with a ton of mod options Tempest - I love seeing luftwaffles whine as they get turned into virtual hair, teeth and eyeballs by 4 20 mm's? Spit Vb - Fun to fly and the classic lines of one of the most beautiful fighter aircraft When I feel like blasting apart commies, the 109G6, 109F4 and 109F2 fit the bill ? 1

JG4_Moltke1871 Posted October 24, 2022 Posted October 24, 2022 1. Ju 88A4. In early Planeset excellent for high altitude’s and excellent speed for a Bomber. (Loose this advantage in later planesets, miss a Late war Bomber like Ju 188 or 388) 2. Ar 234. Blitz is the right nickname for this Jewel. Hit & run! Low Bomb load but excellent accuracy in dive Bombing with autopilot. 3. Ju 52. Just enjoy the only plane in game with more than two engine ? 4. Gotha G.V. Nice sound. A very special plane, don’t forgive any mistake in turbulences. Maybe need a bit attention from the devs, possible the AI pilots not able to handle realistic weather. 5. He 111 H16. Slow Bomber, gunners can’t hit anything but beautiful cockpit and my favourite bomb load with 8x250kg. 5 1/2. DFW C.V. Maybe the most strange plane in the game. Terrible view, big wings hide the view maximum, the cooler direct in front of my face looks like an old TV from behind. I ❤️ it?. But excellent climb for recon mission’s on Flugpark Server and the highest bomb load as an attacker on German side! 1 1
Bernard_IV Posted October 25, 2022 Author Posted October 25, 2022 Yak 9-T is pretty awesome now that I think of it. It's just a bit slow for later war competition but a lot of fun if you are a good shot.
Hoss Posted October 25, 2022 Posted October 25, 2022 (edited) Love Tactical Air Support.... soooooooooooooo 1. P-38, fast, large bomb load, fast, fast............ 2. A-20, fast, good for long vehicle columns. 3. Typhoon, fast, lots of ammo, adjustable sight for rockets. 4. P-47, good bomb load out, performance could be better 5. P-51-C/D, fast, decent bomb load. Field-Ops Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 Me410 - So much value in that plane with all the variants and rarity of finding it in a sim Ar234 - also for the rarity P40E - Complex engine management and anemic supercharger makes for an interesting, no hand holding, combat flight experience Fw190 - A/F8 - Mucho value with all the variants, plus the Anton are my favorite flight characteristics and aesthetic A20-B - Closest we've gotten to larger American bombers, B26 would take this spot from me once its modeled 1
Luftschiff Posted October 26, 2022 Posted October 26, 2022 I'm not surprised but a little sad to see it's almost exclusively late war fighters being listed. To each their own! 1. BF110 G2 - Most beautiful thing in the sim, handles well, it's fast, can carry a hefty payload, a massive gun, and enough burst mass to punish any mistakes. Love it. 2. Bf 109 F-4 - The purebred Messerschmitt, nothing looks or flies more like a fighter. 3. Me. 410 - Visibility, Looks, Armament Options, Internal bomb bay, Gunners - It's just a very cool plane. 4. Macchi C.202 - Gorgeous, A pleasure to fly, would be higher if it wasn't for its really nasty high speed stall and anemic weaponry. Only thing I prefer gunpods ON. 5. Heinkel He 111 H.16 - Again, beautiful, capable. A workhorse that will take whatever you (or the enemy) throw at it. Impossible to use now in the high density 1945-fighter airspace and with high yield bombs made borderline useless. Still, love the thing. 1
