What is FC2's current progress?

I'm just wondering the current state of development of FC2 right now because I'm a huge fan of WWI planes as well as WWII.  I really enjoy the FC1 content, though not having a career mode is disappointing.  I read that FC2 is supposed to have that.  Also, will I be able to fly FC1 planes in career mode with FC2 installed?  Like I would love nothing more than to fly the Sopwith Camel or SPAD 13 in career mode.  How far before the map is done?  How much content is complete?  Is it worth buying at the current Early Access state?  I appreciate any information, thank you.

First of all, welcome to the forums :)

As I'm sure you're already aware, all the planes for FC2 have already been released. Since those planes span the timeframe of the FC1 planeset, I think it's safe to assume the FC1 planes will be flyable in the FC2 career, much like BoM planes are flyable in BoS, or BoN planes in BoBP.

Nobody except the Devs really knows how much of the map is ready, and they aren't exactly known for giving time estimates. However, one of the two announced FC2 maps is basically just a slightly larger version of the FC1 map, so we've basically already got half of the maps as well .:)

It is notable that along with the Normandy release, a couple of landmarks for both the Arras and Verdun maps were released:

I wouldn't really see this as a sign a release is impending (some of the Normandy landmarks were released aeons ago as well), but at least it means there is *some* kind of progress.

Whether FC2 is worth pre-purchasing is a very subjective question, of course. I would say that if you like the planeset or you plan to buy FC2 anyhow upon release, then yes, it's worth purchasing.

New Features of FC2 listed on IL2 store;

  •  Large Western Front map (120,00 sq. km.) with cities, towns, airfields, factories, bridges, farms and the treacherous "No Man's Land".
  •  Ten legendary aircraft of the era - Spad 7.C1, Airco DH.4, Sopwith Triplane, Nieuport 28.C1, Breguet 14.B2, Handley Page 0-400, DFW C.V., Fokker D.VIII, Gotha G.V., Pfalz D.XII
  •  Aircraft models include field and weapon modifications from the era.
  •  Numerous types of buildings, hangars, ground vehicles and scenery objects to enhance mission environment.
  •  Pilot Career mode

The map is not done yet. No specific release date has been announced. It was originally scheduled to be completed by the end of 2021, but that didn’t happen. Ugra Media is making the map.

The FCII planes are complete and playable on the FCI or other GB maps. Custom skin templates are available already for each of them. The field mods should all be done for the aircraft

Some of the new FCII objects have been released. I would imagine more are going to be included.

The career mode should be released with the map and FCII will be complete.

Ironically, FC1 and FC2 along with the Tank crew are the best and most realistic part of the whole GB series....

Can we say that the map is done since 2009 (at release of Rise of Flight) and that what the devs are doing is to break it up and improving the resulting parcels?

Original Rise of Flight map and Flying Circus programm of releases:

parcles -> parcels

I'd be happy with just the different seasons for the existing Arras map, so that I can fly a full PWCG career without it being forever summer...

You can say it, but that doesn’t make it correct. Until a map interfaces with the objects placed on it and it’s distributed to the end user, it’s not done. Obviously Rise of Flight is not Flying Circus I,II and III. I am fairly certain UM is not reusing the same map textures from ROF.

Without seeing a Beta version I can’t be sure yet, but I would bet that the persistent explosions in No-man’s land are gone too.
