Cool choice of music for the F86 vid, awesome band, nice vid but DCS graphics leave me cold...maybe edge will save it ;)

Well, I had a spare giftcard, from way back when, and I used it to pick up the DCS-F-86F, a purchase I was not otherwise intending to make. I am very glad that I did. The DCS F-86F is a hoot. The start up procedure is surprisingly easy. If you try the free to play Mustang Tf-51D. The TF-51D start up procedure is more complex than the start up procedure for the Sabre.

Here is a video of my first time with the Sabre. Please note that I accidentally forgot to record the sound, so i put a song in. The song has profanity and is not suited to every person's taste. So apologies, if you do not like the music:

lol you took the plunge on the 86 before the mig-21! I am also tempted...

It's excellent - really enjoyable to fly and the pit looks great. Still an open beta so some things need to be fixed up and there's a few bugs but it's definitely worth getting. Flew a single player mission last night where a flight of 10 Sabres run into 10 Mig-15s at 35k feet. Looked awesome with all the contrails as the flights ran into each other and a giant furball commenced.

Does anyone know how does it work with steam? I mean I have DCS world and all the modules I have from steam, if I just buy Sabre from DCS e-shop, will it be compatible with the stuff that I have?

I did pre-purchase the Fw190D-9 for DCS. Already got the P-51D. Nice plane to fly if you keep it within specified parameters.

Steam changed their policy a short while ago. Keys bought from ED can't be activated on Steam anymore. However keys bought on Steam can be activated on ED DCS. If you want the Sabre on Steam you'll have to wait until Aug 9th I think. You won't be able to buy it from the ED shop and activate on Steam. All a bit of pain but there's nothing ED can do about it - Steam changed this policy globally to all games as far as I know.

This video shows some of the EDGE lighting and graphics. It is of course on the old map but from this video you can see the difference EDGE is going to make to that sim

and yeah the Sabre is a pretty sweet ride

Well, I just got my ass handed to me by a MiG-29.......I got a lock with a Sidewinder but when I salvoed it did not launch and the MiG did a 'Fly-By Shooting'. My F-15 was obiliterted.

BTW here is a real F-15E simulator checklist: http://www.simairforce.org/downloads/F15E%20checklist%20with%20coluums.pdf

The Mig-29 with IRST and R-73 "Archer" missiles can be a deadly opponent ;) Passive system and R-73 has longer range than AIM-9M, comparable to AIM-9X if you look at web sources.

Remember to fire the GAR-8 missile you need to hold the trigger for about two seconds before she leaves the rails.

Trying to down the MiG-17 is hard enough, a MiG-29 would be very hard I expect.

At that point, I'd opt for guns.

I tried the guns but it appear the RADAR gunsight was not working. I put the piper on the target every time and nothing happened. The farthes shot I tok was .43km and the shortest I got withing .21km.

DCS Combat sim is a very very very worth Sim .. The standard is very high and will set the standard even higher with the new "EDGE" .

Choose a plane you like like learn it and you should see how fun it can be .. Now many third parties are starting to make lots of aircraft .  BoS need to mature and it is normal for any ported  or new sim , RoF is a plenty of face to face combat fun fights :) all of those are fun and just a click away from your own desktop. Now lets BoS get into maturation, The dev need to listen and observe the real pilots that actually flew those aircraft or similar ( NOT taking a Cessna or a Yak-52 as model to act as a Yak-1/3/9 ) for now many effects of surface controls act all on the say way that are wrong in some aircraft but I want to believe that it is a matter of just time .

Can't wait to test the Fw190D-9 :) If they plan to release more WW2 planes I am in. The P-51D already was pretty impressive.

Posted

The current plan is for ED to release the 109 K-4 in October, the Spit IX in December and the P47-D in March with the Me 262 to arrive at some time after that to be defined.

VEAO plan to release the P40-F in December, the Bearcat in February, the Spit XIV in April and the Buchon in May followed later in the year by the Hawker Typhoon and Grumman Wildcat (with lots more in the pipeline after that including my favourite the Mosquito).

I don't have much flying time in DCS. But I do enjoy just doing the training missions and learning the complex systems of the A-10C, Su-25T, and P-51.

DCS's training missions are great. They really explain what each button does and you feel like you really accomplished something when you complete them. This is usually an area that is extremely lacking in flight sims, and why the learning curve is so steep. More time should be spent on the training missions and make them fun and DCS does this great.

I find it VERY hard to find ground targets and other planes in DCS. It's like the engine was designed for BVR air combat. I played an online missions once where we had to take out tanks and I flew over the target 3 times before I saw the tanks in my P-51. Another thing is unless it's a stock plane there really isn't a scenario for many of the newer aircraft. For example in that P-51 online mission I was easily taken out by SAM missiles, I had no idea they were even coming since the P-51 has no missle lock warning or chaff or flare. But still it was fun getting a reaction from all the jet pilots online :)

So someone just getting into this should avoid Steam and buy direct from the DCS web store?

How much disk space does DCS World plus the F86 use?

Thanks for the info.

Yes I would suggest this. You can still add DCS as non-steam game to your steam library to use the Steam overlay if you want.

I Think it's about 14 GB

I really doubt VEAO is going to get very many of those addons done, they can't even put out the Hawk which was supposedly finished in February. If they are done, they'll be finished several years down the pipe.

I have bought all my add-ons directly from ED/DCS, not via Steam.

Yes buy on DCS store not the steam. You can still register modules as a DLC of DCS World. (which is free on Steam, just use same Serial number you got when registering on Stream)

And when there's sale going on, usually it's way much cheaper on DCS store.

We'll see - they've got a number of different teams working on these separate projects. The Hawk was delayed due to legal reasons with BAE. Actual development was essentially completed back in Feb. These legal issues have now been resolved and the Hawk is going to be released in 1.2.9 shortly.

Well, given how they manage things and allow project creep to really screw them over, I'm very skeptical. It's to the point where Fishbed and Sabre may be my only purchases, with C-101 being a possibility since those AvioDev guys are really cool.

Posted

You're misunderstanding project creep. Project creep refers to new objectives being added to the scope of the project or uncontrolled changes impacting the overall scope. They knew about the legal requirements from the beginning but it just took significantly longer for them to be resolved with BAE than anticipated. This was mostly down to BAE and out of their hands. Criticising VEAO for BAE legal department holdups is a little odd.

I was referring to ED, not VEAO. My bad for not clarifying that.

As of to this date DCS don't really give me anything..therefore i would pick Bos anyday..
i find the induvidual planes over priced too..as a ww2 sim DCS has very little to drive on..therefore nothing for me..
but it would be cool to see the future of ww2 in Dcs..but they need to do much much more work then to just add some planes in my opinion they need new historical maps with historical houses..campaign and and so on..i dont see that coming for another year or two..
i dont like flight sims that shift between their focus like Dcs do..and besides..the Dora is more then twice as expancive as La5 or Fw190 here in Bos meaning you could buy both planes and still have 10$ left...

THe sim looks great, but as mentioned many times its not a theater based sim, just an Aircraft sim..  But with the release of the 190 today, Im sure MP is going to see a boost, but lack of a Dedi server really hampers the numbers available.  I played the 190 today in my OR DK2 and its fricken phenomenal,  minus the bad clipping issues.  And its a shame that MP is not available when using the Oculus either.  Hoping BoS gets their OR support going ASAP.

Hey, here's a plus to BOS; it doesn't delete its EXE like DCS did just now upon update!

Yep. We've seen some 15 vs 15 on Dogs of War today. What a blast!

im a big fan of DCS since FLANKER 1

i say get it with all the modules

you won't regreat it

keep in mind that they are going to release a new graphic engine soon

DCS WORLD 2 is on the way late this year for free!!!

I recommend having a look at CLoD with the Team Fusion patches.  Very good WW2 experience and a good range of aircraft - personal favourite bf110.

I have avoided DCS because of its one plane model and I'm not a jet enthusiast.  However, with the release of the F86 I might have to revisit my attitude to DCS.  Plus the Huey seems to have been well received and would be an interesting challenge after fixed wing aircraft.   I have downloaded DCS World to have a look.   We really are spoilt for choice and I only have so much time I can devote to the flight sim hobby!

It is almost a certainty that I will pick up DCS WW2 further down the track, but I am happy to wait for now.

Eventually I want to specialise in one title and join an on-line outfit.

Aus3620 I own several of the Modules for DCS and enjoy flying them but I must say that the Huey is by far my favorite.  It's a new flight sim experience thats challenging, exhilarating and just plain Fun. Next time its on sale for $15 dollars I recommend you pick it up and give it a try.

I always say this: test A10C, you won't regret it. It's absolutely stunning module. In my opinion best sim experience I have had ever. I wasn't that big of jetfan myself before A10 but after learning it and mastering it it have been my favourite since pretty much couple of months after the release.  :salute:

But on the other hand I agree, imo there is no reason to play DCS just for ww2 planes in singleplayer atm. I'm willing to wait and meanwhile BoS isn't the worst option to spend your time!

Hueys are the bane of Black Sharks everywhere, I love it.

It has the best ground handling in any sim bar none. The WW2 aircraft are very difficult to takeoff and land properly. In my opinion it models all aspects to a very highh degree, not just the flying. This is such a nice challenge.

It "feels" the most realistic sim to me. Everything is top notch. Apart from damage modelling, which isn't great by any means, predetermined bits just fall off the plane. Im not some fan boy either, I have flown almost every sim since CFS1
