You have been asking for it (at least some of you have), so here it is:

For the il2sturmovik.com community an English language discord server has be created. Follow the link.

Let me know if you have any problems with the link.

I would join this, but it wants "access to my discord Account", and that doesn't seem like a reasonable thing to ask for no matter how safe you might think it is.

Concur - if you follow the link, you go to a verification site called 'captcha.bot'.  I read the 'captcha.bot' privacy policy, and they collect mandatory data including mouse movements, payments, etc...  Highly intrusive.  I'll stick with the forum, and our existing groups.

Missing out on lots, the devs talk quite a bit there.

Discord has 300,000,000 users. Pretty sure if there was a viable privacy breach we'd know.

Welcome to 2022, you are the product. Discord, Facebook, Gmail, Outlook, YouTube, Instagram, Google Chrome, Edge, Firefox, Steam, Origin, Android, iOS, Echo, Google Home, modern cars, smart fridges, smart TVs, smart thermostats, basically any other internet connected consumer product you can think of collects our information.

We've already sold ourselves out just having a basic presence in the world. And it isn't really like it matters, you aren't that interesting anyways; just another way to make money.

So have fun, and don't be a prude about it. :coffee:

Honestly, if you think privacy doesn't really matter you must have been living under a rock for the past couple of years.

I don't own/use at least half of the things you mention, and the others I've configured for maximum privacy and avoid giving any personal information beyond what's absolutely needed. Perhaps it helps that I live in the EU and that every self-respecting large company basically has to comply with EU privacy regulations, at least for their EU-based customers.

Of course privacy matters to me, but I have the ability to recognize that by using certain things I'm sacrificing my privacy up to a base level. I mean, even those tick boxes you uncheck and settings you change can be completely ignored and worked around. Companies have violated privacy terms, and they will continue to as long as there are no major ramifications for getting caught.

When it comes down to it, one Discord bot doesn't matter. And I guarantee you, you aren't as slick as you think you are.

Don't do Discord.

Can't sign up to their privacy policy terms and conditions.

Reminds me of that old saying that "there is no such thing as a free lunch."

Discord smells very off to me.

It also has a very infantile look and attraction.

Happy landings,

I’m a bit if a Luddite but I couldn’t get by without Discord. I work with multiple 3rd party developers (and I’m one myself) and the communication Discord facilitates is indispensable.

I stay the hell away from everything else.

FB, twatter, etc

(Note: I work at Discord, been an engineer here for over 6 years).

Obviously I am biased because I work here, however, Discord is a bit unique from existing social media companies out there. We don't sell ads, our business model is selling user subscriptions (i.e. you can choose to pay us a few bucks a month to unlock additional features).

Why does this matter? Well if your entire business model is selling ads, then the way you "engineer" your product is to make it as addictive as possible (also called "engagement" to make it sound more palatable). We have to build our product in a way that gets people to pay us money for it. I think we may be the only social media company at any significant scale who doesn't rely on advertising.

So to say the user "is our product" is not technically accurate here.

Tried to join, wasting time as they wanted me to create a new account, already have one ... did not succeed, time expired.

AND now these procedures screwed up my existing account!

I’ve never had a discord server redirect me to a verification bot.

The link has been updated.

Neither have I, but Discord servers are private, the operators can do whatever they see fit.

The captcha.bot definitely needs some tuning. I've been trying to sign up for the IL-2 channel for about a half hour, stuck on the captcha.bot. I have a Discord account with several servers on board and have not had any issues. I'm about to give up on IL-2.

Cyber security is excellent, keeps everyone off.

Thanks, We will take a look at it.

Yeah, I couldn’t even make it work (this was weeks and weeks ago) so just dropped it. A needless, head-scratcher of a complication and obstruction.

I just looked at it and had no problem verifying and logging in. There is a grand total of about 4 posts about things I have already seen on the forum.

Since Il-2 has a comprehensive forum, a Discord server is kind of redundant. Most of the Discord servers I belong to are developers who do not have a forum of this magnitude. The only real connection between developer and the gamers, as well as the gamers amongst themselves, is the Steam discussion page, which IMO, mostly suck. Also, Discord is mainly a mobile device thing, popular with younger people, perhaps not as much with a more mature audience(I include myself here).

And that is why we have one.

Forums are old school, like myself.

I am older than most dirt, but I still use Discord as well as internet forums, although forums seem to be losing popularity somewhat.

S!,

This is especially true in the Tank Crew forums. It seems that the Devs have sent us TC guys to the desert to waste away.

Does every "Server" have their own discord channel? Sorry, I'm a caveman, how does it work?

No, but almost every game server has its own discord server.
