PatrickAWlson Posted October 13, 2022 Posted October 13, 2022 I just did a comparison of ground objects between Moscow and Normandy. Moscow 9,000+. Normandy 44,000+ Normandy has almost 5x the number of defined ground objects for its map compared to Moscow. I think it's fair to say that the extra few months wait for this map is quite understandable. 14
Vastarien Posted October 16, 2022 Posted October 16, 2022 Hoping FC2 map is at least of the same quality. Normandy seems an improvement over Arras map…

migmadmarine Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 Well, given there are community map teams out there, it would say it's technically possible, but very very very unlikely.
Avimimus Posted December 28, 2022 Posted December 28, 2022 (edited) I personally wish they'd release a half-module five aircraft/variant 1942-1944 'Channel Map' expansion as a way to fund the addition of hedgerows and more historically accurate British targets. E.g. Currently the map has a 21st British rail system, with entire railways completely missing - it'd be nice to seem them added as targets. Similarly, many of the docks are missing or in the wrong places. It makes it hard to do a proper 1942 Fw-190 Jabo campaign or Operation Steinbock bombing campagin! 5 hours ago, drewm3i-VR said: Not possible. Well, if the topology data could be combined and the tile sets connected... one could probably make a hybrid map using parts of both maps (and even re-using existing object groups). So one could have a map between the two (although combining them to make a giant map probably isn't possible with current tech). Edited December 28, 2022 by Avimimus

Thought I'd chime in as I like to think of myself as somewhat of an expert on terrain modification. Almost everything in IL2 is editable (well, the .mesh files aren't - yet - but you can do the same things with .dat files). The heightmaps are the only thing you cannot edit. The game calculates some kind of a hash of the height file, and if this differs from what it's supposed to be, IL2 will refuse to load it. In other words, to load a height map into IL2 (which you'll need to do to expand/combine maps), you need to have the cooperation of the Devs. So unless the Devs help you, it's impossible to combine both maps (not to mention the *huge* amount of effort that'd take).

And to add on to this...the answer is in Pat Wilson's post...the Rheinland Map is huge, as is Normandy. Both contain tens of thousands of objects with their own accompanying damage model, which makes the combination of these maps technically unfeasible even if the devs wanted to be done. Furthermore, the team that is going to be improving these maps, will be adding many more objects to each. With the current game engine, doing something like this would be simply silly without B-17s/24s to take deep into the Ruhr. Edited December 28, 2022 by drewm3i-VR
