Is there a way to disable these updates?  Twice now, when I have had about 30 min I wanted to go for a quick fly but NO!, downloading GB of data and installing, last time it was 25gb of data and now 11gb, by the time it is done I will be done.  Checked settings but didn't see anything.

It took mine 26 minutes to download, and install.

Well I am now at 70min, about 40min to DL (9-10mb/sec) and now staring at it as the red bar is almost to the end but not moving further on a WD blue SSD 530mb/sec R/W.  Just brutal, worst game I own for updating.

Starting the game using il2.exe directly rather than il2_launcher.exe (that default desktop shortcut points to) should do the trick I guess? Create a separate shortcut to that one and use the launcher only when you know from the forums that the update is out.

Really?. Just play off line!

You the one I guess!

I would say around 40 minutes installed. The download speed varied wildly from 200 Mb/sec to 34Kb/sec. In theory at full sustained speed I would download 1Gb/sec which means the 11.2 GB (112 Gbit, I calculate 8bit per byte + 2 control bits per byte = 10 bits per byte), in about 112 seconds or rounded 2 minutes + installation.

Will try using the il2.exe from now on and see how it goes next time there is an update, thanks for the constructive feedback.

Really?  How do you play offline when as soon as the game is launched it starts downloading updates before it even asks whether you wish to go online/offline?  Maybe Art-J's suggestion will help but "you the one I guess!" whatever that means.

Well using the il2.exe doesn't work, tried it tonight going offline and all I get is "please update the game" so Art-J thanks for the suggestion but it didn't work and Muddy...gee guess you were wrong, off line matters not, 1C shoves the update down your throat and will not launch the game until you DL.

It should be my option to update the game, if I wish to play with version 1.0 who is 1C to tell me I must use 5.0, did they give me the game for free?

It works fine. But offline mode will only work if you have not already version checked with the master server. It's a pain in the ass for those of us with poor Internet for sure.

Once your game has established that your software is out of date, you are committed to running the full update unfortunately.

I play offline only and am currently running 4.7. I have no Internet at home and will be taking my rig into a gaming lounge this weekend to run multiple updates. I'm expecting about 40gb for il2 alone ?

I really wish the career mode could be offline as it doesn't even need to be on a network to function. Just part of the paranoid copyright protection I'm afraid

It actually does need to be connected, the career generation is on the server side. The reason they did it this way so they can easily update career generation parameters and make changes quickly rather than having to do a patch every time there's an update to various career generation data.

Sorry bruv, but it most definitley does not. I have no Internet connection at home. If I'm feeling brave, and am sure there is no imminent update and I'm on current version, I can use my phone to hotspot a connection to start up il2, then disconnect and start up my careers. I have even kept il2 running in the background for 2 weeks with no network and still able to play and save career progress.... I have vast experience in 3rd world rural offline lol

The devs stated that the career generation is server side.

Maybe back in the day when they had to rectify the silly way aircraft upgrades was done, but I can assure you, I am doing it without a network... I have no phone line, poor cell coverage and no line of sight for wireless Internet... Elon is my only hope lol and even his network is partially blocked by trees.

It's kinda like living in 1984 with mod cons ?

Try it yourself. Start up il2. Disconnect your network in the background and try start a career... Unless it's changed since 4.7,then you should still be able to generate and fly a career for any module you own

If the launcher has started downloading just stop it by closing the launcher window.

This will stop the download. Then simply launch directly the .... \IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles\bin\game\IL-2.exe file and there you are.

Now if you want to keep and archive an old version, then first just copy the whole IL-2 Sturmovik Great Battles directory on another place and then start downloading the new version and that's it.

I tried that the night I posted this topic, hit the X but I then launched using IL2 launcher which of course didn't work; the next night I tried il2.exe and it said that an update was available and to connect to update the game, it would not let me start the game (that was the 90mb update the night after the 11gb) it just present a grey bar and "update to launch game" window where it normally says "PLAY" in the red bar.

I also found out tonight you cannot clean the files out of the downloads folder, I was cleaning out junk files yesterday, figured like Windows DL files once updated you don't need them so I emptied the download folder, tonight I have had to sit for about 10 minutes while it verified the game files.

I tried playing last night in "airplane" mode (no internet) and it would not launch, so what is going on with my game?

***And tonight it worked with no internet connection an Il2.exe, so I don't know***

Sorry man, because you tried to connect in the very first instance, il2 now knows that your game is out of version - a version check is one of the first things that happens... No amount of cancelling the download or moving update files will change this, trust me, I have tried.

You are now committed to the update and must proceed if you ever want to use it again. Sorry, but that's just how it is.

Once you have successfully updated your game, if you select offline from the il2.exe, you will be fine, you can continue to do this idefinitley

The update must be done AND after that the game must have been started at least once.
Then you can use the offline mode.
That is how I understood it years ago in another discussion about this same issue.

That would be possible, as each time I run the updates, I check with a QMB flight upon completion, then unplug and head home to fly me brains out ?

Thank you all for the replies, much appreciated and I won't go on about this anymore.  Now I just have to remember how the heck to enable in cockpit photos, had them on, turned them off, and now can't remember how I did it...old age sucks.

Should be in a dropdown menu* in the immediate pre-flight screen before a QMB or career sortie.

*Edit: found in the same screen where you pick aircraft skins and tactical codes.

That is what I thought, but I will be darned about it, it should be on the upper right if I remember correctly.  I am probably doing the typical male thing, "looking but not seeing".

Got it, just had to open the tab.  You know how many times I looked at those tabs and ignored them!!

This is true only if you want to play in "Connected" mode. Otherwise, if you play in "offline" mode there is no problem it will launch.

Incorrect. If you are out of version and the game has established this, then you must complete the update process even if you want to play offline
